440 sits for 25 years, will it run
I might buy a 440 that hasn't run since 81. Is there a chance I can drop this thing into my car or will it require a rebuild?

I would at least pull the heads to check that the bores aren't rusty. Do you know how it ran before it was put in mothballs, and more importantly, why it was taken out? If not I'd go through the bottom end too, at least to make sure the bearings aren't shot. I'd hate to drop it in, then find a broken ring or rod knock, then have to pull it again. Personal preference - I'd make the most of having it out of the car to freshen it up.

I agree, do your self a favor and go through it before installing and trying to start.

I agree if you do check it out and dont do anything i would make sure to replace all freeze plugs and front and rear main seals because the freeze plugs will rot fom the inside out and the front and rear main seals will be hard as a rock.

haha my 383 fired right up after 25+ years sitting, it just needed the exhaust to be cut off to breath (mice) and a little fuel put into the bowls, so far ive put a 1000 miles on the engine with no issues other than the carb.

It can happen, and you got lucky. Personally I'd make the most of it and go through the motor before it goes between the frame rails. As 71 500 mentioned, the seals will probably be rock hard and I'd definitely take the time to throw a new set of freeze plugs in. Check the timing chain too. If you're going to drop a 440 in something, it's probably for the performance. You might as well make sure it's up to the job and able to fire on all eight.

If it was in a car I wouldn't hesitate to try, as long as it turned over freely.
since it's out, I'd pull the heads and take a peak. |

Forgive me but it is rather a dumb question. The only protection that engine has seen is the coat of oil that was left on everything the last time it was run. What do you wanna best that oil was nasty. Oil breaks down into a gum. You can probably soak the internals in Mystery Oil or some such snake juice and get it to turn over, and probably get compression on the cylinder. BUT would you really want to?
Playing with old cars is not a poor man hobby. If you are going to do things right, count on a rebuild. |
