I went to the slant 6 forum on this website, and searched under the word "swap," and got these hits. You may also want to search under "318" in the slant six forum of this website.

Those cars were available with 273 engines, the 318 is pretty much hte same thing. Th e/6 and V8 K-member in those cars were the same, so all you need is the correct engine mounts and insulators, available from Schumacher or can be self made. If you do it yourself, measure the crank centerline location of the current /6 to get the V8 in to the same position (height from the K-member, distance from right & left frame rails). The early cars only came with manuals and 904's, so if your trans is a 727, you propably have to clearance the trans tunnel a little. At least flatten the body seam in the tunnel. If I remeber correctly, '65 A-bodies still had a driveshaft with a flange in the front. If yours does, you need a driveshaft too, cut in to proper length. The original 7 1/4" rear axle will not live very long, if power is used. Exhaust may be some sort of a trouble too, the early A-body V8 manifolds are hard to find and restrictive, and it may be that your manifolds do not fit. Trimming the steering shaft cover may help, but there goes your column shifter. The '65 automatic should still be cable operated, so I think an aftermarket floor shifter is in order anyway. Some headers are available, but they are pretty expensive and not necessarily needed with a moderate 318.

I ran into a problem with exhaust manifolds changing from a 6 to a v-8 in my pickup (first swap was a 318) I took a manifold from the other side and it matched up fine. So it was center dump on both sides.

well i already hav some headers. and im using the stock tranny out of the dart it an auto. so i will need to move the shifter to the floor thats ok with me.easy enought.
that sucks about the driveline i will need to find one off of what vehicle? or will i have to have my redone? what should i swap the rearend with. i cant think of anything narrow enough. and im on a tight budget im a college student. hahaha |

Just run the orig rear then, run it till it breaks, you never know, might last a long time, and what good is it anyway. might as well recycle it all busted it isnt worth anything in good shape.
