383 manifold shootout
Check out the latest issue of Hot Rod, or some other rag and look for the 383 intake shoot out in small script along the bottom. They actually did a story on a MOPAR! Editor must have seen the "383" and threw it in the edition thinking it was a stroked 350 build...anyway, They put up 7 or 8 intakes, all the swap meet pieces and an STR-15 and mounted them on a edel headed 383, warmed up with a hotter cam and such. Well the Edel Performer RPM seems to be the best all around intake, not really suprising, but what was was the lowly relic called the STREET DOMINATOR!! Yeah, baby..I have been saying all along that this intake rocks for a 35 year old design. It loses like 1 hp to the RPM in one catagory and passes it in a few others. STR-15 was a dog with its AFB carburation. The only intake that "dominated" was the Weiand "hi-ram" dual 4 tunnel ram, topping the RPM by about 30 hp/Tq both low and high RPM tests. Check it out, maybe its on line somewhere but MY Street Dominator is staying on my B! DP4B was weak as well as the TM-6 and the Torker, 6 pack and the dual quad intakes were iffy considering the cost of the carburation and tuning factors. The STR-15 had the inline top, not the offset one. The MP single plane did pretty well too, but not as well as the RPM/SD. Anyone have the issue to confirm, I just skimmed it waiting in line and might have transposed some numbers, but I was stoked!

Yea, I got it. Somewhere around here. I saw it on the stand and did a double take. That old relic..he he he, the Holley street dom....lacked low RPM torque. However, I think if your ride is a hot one, you'll be looking passed that operating rpm and dive right into the power area with a hi-stall converter and steep gears anyway.
Believe it or not, I just was given one by a bud. (Street Dom.) I'm just waiting for a warm day. Might be a few months though. I actually can't beileve he had one. When he said he'd give it to me, I was like ARE YOU SURE?!?!? Glad it popped up when it did. It beats paying for a new RPM. Which I was about to get. I wouldn't be to down on the other intakes. Some were simply out of there realm of operation. Like the DP4B. That is a simple dual plane. idle to 5500 type intake. |

At least the Mopar M1s for both the 383 and 440 do very well in these shootouts.
