The mysterious starts when it wants too Dart
Anyone know how to bypass the seatbelt interlock system on a 1974 Dart ? I did see one on a search that said you cut the two yellow wires and connect them together but is this at the yellow box under the dash or at the little box sitting on the inner driver side fender? Not sure if this is my problem or not but I thought it would be a place to start.
In a nut shell the car only starts when it wants too with the key but will ALWAYS start with the screw driver trick at the starter relay. 1: Always seems to start with the key when itÂ’s cold, say leaving it over night. 2: Sometimes turn the key and get nothing, no click, no nothing. 3: Sometimes it turns over with the key but just keeps turning over and will not fire up 4: Starts every time from the screwdriver on the starter relay |

Sounds like it might be an ignition switch issue. My 68 Polara does that now and then. It does not always put the power to the start circuit for the coil. I found that if I let the ignition switch return to the run position it fires up. Haven't gotten around to replacing it since I'm in Europe and the car is in Nevada.

The seat belt wont keep it from starting. Like LD said its probably in the switch.

Would a defective ignition switch cause it to turn over but not start ?

Ok, so I think I got the interlock bypassed. I cut the two yellow wires at the control box under the dash and connected the wires together.
It started right up, went for a drive and when I tried to restart it, it just keeps cranking over but does not fire up. One thing I did notice is that it does sorta feel like it wants to start when the key goes back to the run position from trying to start it. And it will always start with the screw driver at the starter relay. Tried two new ballast resistors Tried grounding the starter relay terminal that goes to the NSS. Any ideas |

Something that is most always overlooked is the line going to the ALT gauge.
I have seen the terminals get dirty and do exactly what you are describing. Accessories will work, but it will not start. Pull the inst cluster, remove the cables, and clean the heck out of the terminals, replace the cables. Your problem might disappear. |

A situation like yours, sometimes it works, sometimes not, is most likely bad connection somwhere... have you tried to wiggle(??) on the connections where all the cables from the engine goes in to the car when this happen? the reason it will try to fire up when you let go the key, is beause then the ignition get power from the "drive" position in the ignition switch! if youre lucey, it will start...mostly not, a v8 is heavy to turn good luck |
