516 port volume?
I have a set of 516 heads on 1964 383 hp and I' put 1.74" exaust valves. Is the intake/exaust port volume similar to 906 heads?

Actually, they are not. They are the older more restirctive design, with somewhat worse intake port design, and a little more worse exhaust port design. In ported form, they are usually 5-10% worse on the intake side than the newer heads. Exhaust ports in the newer castings are pretty much the same, but on the intake side the 915 and 906 heads have their own design, and the later ones share a common design. The 915 and 906 designs usually have better ports at low and mid lifts, but at higher lifts they even out wiht the newer designs. When ported, the 915/906 heads take more effort and skill, more material needs to be removed and the heads live or die with a correctly shaped short side. Therefore for example teh MP porting templates tell you not to touch the short side, because doing them wrong can really ruin the 915/906 heads. On the other hand, for good results the short side needs to be done. The newer heads with not much short side to talk about are easier even for an amateur to get to perform well. Here is good information about the three types:
