Idea 340 5 speed manual?

I have a 340 duster with a 727 in it now. im planning up a build for it but i also want to convert the car to strait drive. i'm not looking for a huge amount of power maybe 300-350 range. I know i can get a kiesler(sp) but they are an arm and a leg. i was wondering if a 5 speed out of a dakota/ram would work behind the 340? bellhousing patern and input shaft depth for the crank? i have looked and looked on the web not being able to find anyone who has done it and i would like to try it. btw i think the trans's name is a nv2500. thanks for the help

Gripe Mother Mopar didn't offer these with a V8......

They were available in the V6 because of the lower torque. I thought about this swap but figured I'd break it very soon after the swap. The going price at that time was $800 and I couldn't afford the breakage. It would be great if someone could figure out how to make them hold up behind a V8 with 350-400 hp. This would be SOOOOO sweet.

Heck that wouldn't be that hard. You could always step up to the NV4500 (if the rockcrawler guys haven't snagged them all up) or put a throttle stop on it, that would be the easiest thing.....

yeah the 3500's and 4500's came only in a ram and i would only need a 2wd so the only thing i have to fight with is the car crushers. around here all the junk yards are crushing anything 10 years and older. so that being said anyone got a 3500 or 4500 for sale? also need a flywheel and slave cylinder and front driveshaft yoke. thanks

Don't those truck trannys have super-wide ratios? I don't think they'd work too well in a performance car application.

I have a Tremec 3550 TKO behind my 340. I got it from Keisler and it was a little pricey. I just bought the transmssion from Keislers and I sent them the stock bellhousing and they mounted an adapter plate to it for the Tremec to bolt up to. I set up my own hydraulic clutch. I used a Ford clutch disc and a chevy pressure plate. I had to use the chevy pressure plate because the borg and beck three finger one had clearance problems. The Heavy duty chevy pressure plate bolted right up to the stock Mopar flywheel. I have all of the part numbers written down somewhere. I was thinking you might find a Tremec 3550 or a 3550 TKO on ebay for a lot less money. You would have to change your driveshaft yoke also for the correct splines. This change to a 5 speed was the best upgrade I have made. It shifts great with a low 3:27 first gear and the overdrive 5th gear for cruizing on the highway. I believe I had to buy a different pilot bearing too. It also needs a different size diameter throwout bearing to fit the Tremec. I believe this was a big block Mopar throwout bearing. It took me a while to get it all lined out but now it works great. I already have about 5000 miles on it.

I put a Gforce GF5R 5 speed in a 66 bel and it works great. 2.62 low and 1.1 high.

Close ratios keeps the power of the engine in a tighter band...for smoother shifting and transfer of power.

If you look back through the archives you'll find some previous disussion of the 87-92 Toyota Supra Turbo R154 5-speed. It can be hooked up to the Mopar Small Block using the 94 - 00 3.9L V6 Dakota bellhousing.

It's a good news\bad news situation. The good news, it's got good gear ratio's for the street.

R154 - 3.25 1.95 1.30 1.00 0.75

The bad news, to make it fit, you'd have to cut out a portion of the crossmember to make it fit. Which is why no one really wants to do this.

Default I found it!!!!!

I found a place that makes a bellhousing to directly bolt a T-5 from a Mustang to my 340!!!! it is a rolled steel bellhousing and requires no ceterline setup like a lakewood does.

Reference using a Tremec 3550 TKO tranny, I can give you most of the part numbers I used. I haven't looked for them lately but I think I have them. Oh and I read the post about mounting a T5 transmission to the mopar bellhousing. I already did that before I went to the Tremec 3550 TKO. I took a stock 340 4 speed bellhousing and had a local machine shop make an adapter plate to mount the T5 up to. The T5 is out of a 94 mustang. For this setup I had to use the 10 spline Ford mustang 5.0 clutch disc. The same machine shop had to make me a pilot bushing out of oillite material to fit the
T5's transmission front shaft. I had no problems with the T5 but I was afraid it was not going to be strong enough so I changed to the TKO. I still have the T5 and converted bellhousing for it.

This setup probably was easier for me since my 340 is in a 32 chevy and I did not have any clearance problems with the body or chassis.

You could actually get a 5spd in a Dakota behind a 318 and behind the 4.7. They didn't make a ton of them, but I have been in a few, both 4wd and 2wd versions. I don't know if it would hold up to much HP or not. I wish I did though, because the idea of using one behind my 340 for my Barracuda is one I have considerred too.
