J heads....just like all 71 and later 360 heads...
1.88 intake...1.60 exhaust valves... combustion chambers probably around 72 cc unless they have been cut previously |

What kind of potential is in these heads? And what would it take to get every bit of that potential out of them? Suggestions, please??

No, J heads are (last 3) 915. 71 360 & 72 340/360. The 596 will probably have the humps in the exhaust ports, will flow a bit less than the J O 915 heads

I dropped a set of 2.02 intakes in a pair of 596s and ported them. They cleaned up pretty well and unlike all the earlier ones I tried (three sets) they weren't cracked. In retrospect I wish I'd spent the time and money on a pair of magnum heads and gone that route, but there you go. Next time...

You'll have to plug the EGR ports if you intend using headers. The bump in the exhaust can be reduced, but as with porting any head - be careful. Break through into anything (water jacket, etc) and it's scrap. And it's a good idea to get them crack tested - pay special attention to the area between the valves. That's where mine had problems.

As far as plugging the EGR ports...kinda figured that when I got a good look at them. Suggestions on what to use to do this if I do use these heads?
Thanks. |

I just ran a 1/4-20 tap into them on my 360 (4027596 truck heads) and screwed in some 1/2" long set screws with red Loctite. Go easy with the tap, the remains of my first one are still in one of the holes.

My uncle builds my engines. We built a set of 302 heads for my brothers 318 in his race car, what he did, since we were using magnum manifolds was get some brass stock, (Im not sure where he got it) that fits in the holes, he cut a chunk off and rammed them in the ports and ground them flush, he then peened them in there, easy, you could actually do it on mthe engine in the car. They lasted all season in the race car, so if they can survive that, they will last a long time on the road as a daily driver. Cheap too. I dont know what size the holes are, but get the size they are in a brass rod, i think you can get it at most hardware stores, maybe even HomeDepot or something. I think this is the way to go.

In working with that head. Home porting suggestions would be shorten and narrow the valve guide, bowl hog it and port match it, then take as much of the pinch area at the push rod. Leave the floor alone.
Good valves like Ferra stainless steel with a race preped job at the seat. |
