Default R&P Swap

I have decided to try and change out my own R&P.

Now anyone have any tips that you can recommend?

Also should I get the Summit depth tool?

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Or does someone know another way of doing this without it? I already have a magnetic stand and a dial indicator.

Any help or tips would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!!

They make the big end pinion bearing (press on end) that has been honed out so it slides on and off pinion easy when you are changing the shims to get pinion depth correct. (whew) Then its just a matter getting the correct pattern on the teeth. Use a regular nut when you tighten the pinion bearing to check specs, and don't use the crush sleeve yet. Once you have the correct depth and gear pattern set, now you can press on the stock bearing and put together. I like the shimed sleeve rather than the crush one to set preload on pinion bearings. Locktite the pinion nut.
If you take your time its not that hard to do. A friend who has done this before can guide you through or use a manual for help.
I'm pretty sure Reider Racing has this bearing for sale.
Hope this helps!

get your hands on a factory service manual for your car.
also, there was a good step-by-step article in the feb 2008
mopar action about gear swaps for the 8-3/4.

I just got a service manual and also I picked up the Richmond Gear video on DVD and also have a copy of the article on the 8 3/4 gear swap.

A buddy of mine is gonna help me too. He's never done a gear swap either but I'm hoping with the two of us we can figure it out. Or beat the crap out of each other trying. LOL!!!!

I thought about about using a solid spacer instead if a crush sleeve. I just picked up a spanner wrench and I might pick up the Summit Depth checker.. The only thing is that it's universal. Sometimes those universal tools ain't so universal.

Setting the carrier and pinion preload is an art in itself. The pinion depth must be within about .004" of spec or the gears will not mesh properly. I posted some helpful comments on the Classracer forum last week on this subject.

Since the factory and every gear manufacturer states that the tooth contact pattern is the only indicator of properly meshed gears, the pinion depth dimension etched on the gear is only a reference.
