Default cam

geneo,

my dad has a very similar set up to in his 70 challenger, but his is a 400 using mopar stage V heads. he has the same gears, doug's headers, msd ignition, similar intake wiend brand, 750 holley double pump it sounds like the same car to be honest. the engine was built by dick landy industries back in the late 90's and it was featured in Mopar Muscle Magazine as 400 triple threat, it was on the cover. He used a crane cam selected by Landy because my dad wanted a reliable cruiser like yourself. here is the cam by crane:

don't let the specs fool you it has a wonderful idle and pulls feel hard thru the mid range. but what i like best is with the flowmaster 3 chambers and split tips of the exhaust it sounds good and healthy. the motor dyno'd at 407 horse and 429 torque at 3400 rpm if my memory is right and volumetric effienfcy was over 100% thru the mid range rpms. Basically it whats my dad wanted 1 horse per cubic inch and no maintance, check it out its a good choice.

don't go too crazy with your cam choice on these engines as the short stroke and stock tork converter will not like it. i'd go a comp extreme grind, probably a XE262H, part #21-222-4 or the next bigger one, a XE268H #21-223-4, but no bigger than that. dosent have to be a comp grind either, I just used those specs to give you an idea of what "size" cam to shoot for.............djs

I just finished reading 909duster's reply and remembered that I used the exact cam he wrote about in a 383 I built about 3 years ago. it was a 10.1:1 compression engine, worked awsum-a very good choice in my opinion!....djs

I agree that sounds like a very nice cam for the application.

I would go with a cam with .290 duration for the intake/exhaust and .490 for the lift exhaust/lift..... this is the specs I used in a 350 back in the 80's worked good with the 2.02 heads and 700CFM carb.... many moons ago that was....
