Default HOTROD Mag Intake Manifold Dyno Testing

Did any of you guys read the HOTROD Engine mag were they tested 18 different intake manifolds on a built 383. They got most of them on ebay.

I thought it was interesting so I compiled all the info for my future reference and I thought I would share it with you.

Engine specs
383 bored 0.060 (395 cid)
Stock steel crank
Racing Girdle
Milodon Oiling System
Stock rods with ARP bolts
Diamond Racing 10.3 to pistons
Comp Cam Solid Flat tappet 239/247 duration @ 0.050 with 0.573/0.597 valve lift with 1.6 rockers.

Tested with
Hooker super comp headers
850 CFM holley (unless test dual quads)
Mallory mag pick-up set at 39 degrees total
Each manifold was tested and dialed in for jetting to get the peak power.
Each manifold was tested for vacuum at 900 rpm idle and fell between 9.2 & 9.8 inches

The first test was done with stock 906 heads with valve springs to match the camshaft.

In the first test the heads were the restriction.

The second set of testing was done with the following mods to the engine.
Edlebrock Performer RPM heads – CNC portedflowing 320 cfm
Comp Cam 263/267 with peak lift 0.646/0.648

Pretty well sums up what i have told a lot of people about,...that the Holley street dominator is NO SLOUCH!!! . Small block or Big block,..that manifold hauls!. Sure the Eddy RPM manifold is great, but it is tall and on the rb engines there are some hood clearance problems with a tall air cleaner! The Dominator is short and fits most engine compartments with no problem! I was surprised about the torqer manifold!

What this tells me is, that there really isn't such a thing as the best intake manifold. If you count out the clearly worst offenhausers low intakes, which to me isn't much of a surprise, the rest are reasonably even in a healthy street engine, and the orders and results may vary according to the combinations. In the "hotter" version, some intakes do not flow enough, and fall behind. That's no surprise either. Wonder why they didn't test tram G with the hotter set up. We used team G in our low buck, parts from swap meet 400, and it run mid tens with it, so it really shouldn't be quite that bad?

I was wondeing the same thing about the team G. I know a few guys that love them. I would like to see all these manifolds run again with a set of steel ported and polished heads. I know many of you guys just buy aftermarket heads but some of us still use stock ported and polished heads.

I had a Team G Dominator on my super gas car. According to my head porter it was a POS out of the box. He did some welding and porting on it and claimed it was good as any after the work he did. -Bob
