Magnum engines cam with a bigger cam. (Road runner cam HP cam etc... )
I also *think* it was a double roller t-chain equiped, unsilenced air cleaner, and beter exhaust manifolds, viscous fan.

But this *I think* is what seperates it.

Many older 383's came with 2bbl.'s and lower compresion ratios.

Here's the thing. If you are trying to document this engine, then you'll just have to check all the casting numbers.

As old as all these are getting to be, someone could have stuck ANYTHING into or on that engine, an example:

Years ago, a friend had a '68 383 Roadrunner, and wanted to do a valve job. He had pulled them because of an overheating problem. Some backwater mechanic "just happened" to have a set of heads ready to go. I don't remember, but they were off an early 383, say, 65 or so

So from then on, that car had the "incorrect" heads, for anyone who "found" it one day later, and trying to restore

I don't remember anymore, but I do NOT think my old 69 383 RR came with a roller cam drive. It did have a windage tray.

Compression, cam, exhaust manifolds, 4bbl intake & carb (also available on non-Magnum 383 4bbl) windage tray. I'm sure somebody at some point had a factory Magnum/Roadrunner engine that was without the tray, though.

Magnum was just the Dodge name on these engines. It had nothing to do with performance level. Even the 2 bbl was a Magnum.

Also, the block casting number will only confirm the year range of the engine.

thats the first time ive ever heard that before a 383 magnum was the highest performance level engine installed in the dodge same engine as the 383 road runner engine and plymouth commando 2 bbl 383 is not called magnum ill say it again your wrong e a 2bbl is not a mgnum in 1969 there were 4 versions of the 383.2bbl 4bbl hp and MAGNUM all 4 engines have the same block the same heads the same crank and the same connecting rods. magnum and hp version are the same cept for 650avs carter on hp 650afb carter on magnum no windage try on hp. 4bbl and 2bbl r the same cept for carb they both had lower compression different exaust manifold and they came with single exaust the carb was a 625 carter

Right. All Dodge 383 eng. were not Magnums, just like all Plymouth 383 eng. were not Super Commandos (4bbl only non-RR'er eng)

Let me throw this in the mix if I may! I had a '67 Sport Fury ( Stock 383 that I used to regularly spank a lot of "performance cars" ! One guy with a Mach 1 asked what the hell I had, I said slant 6, OH what fun !) back in '73 and bought a '70 SuperBee Stock 383 Magnum. The SuperBee was a "lay down dawg" next to the Sport Fury ???!!!!! I was SO disappionted with the "MAGNUM". So I did a little experiment. I took the carb ( Carter ? )off the Sport Fury and put it on the SuperBee ( definately HOLLEY,with a little work as I recall )What a difference ! F-60-14 bias ply's couldn't get ahold of the road !!! L-60 would smoke long and hard too ! After a "warm-up" and about 25psi in the 60's I could make the front end REAL LIGHT. That car would REALLY HAUL ASS then ! THEN it WAS a MAGNUM. How come ? Any answers to this ? Wish I had both off those cars today !
