Usually the 318 factory pistons are about .090" below the deck at TDC. Typical 318 open chamber heads are about 68-70cc, and typical open chamber 340-360 heads are 2-5 cc's more. The last 318 I built, with 318 heads, ahd a true CR of 7.49:1 with .040" thick head gaskets. Milling the heads .090" gave me a whopping 8.7:1. Milling that much isn't very practical, you have intake manifold fitment problems and even pushrod length/lifter preload problems that mus be solved, and usually paid for. So, my opipnion is, that the only erasonable way to bring up the compression ratio of a 318, is to change the pistons.

The tallest stock piston is a roller engine piston before the Magnums came in.

Then theres the KB's that will offer a zero deck slug. It may require a minor milling on some blocks. Others will not.
