It's called a CAP (Cleaner Air Package) valve, it's purpose is to advance the spark during deceleration to clean up the emissions.

Many people disconnect it thinking that it affects performance but it doesn't.

john that looks simlar except for the mount. the two conn. on the end were connected with a hose and not conn to the dist. don't see how it could effect timing. were these on all 68's? i had a 68 sp sat new in 68, don't remember it having one, it was a automatic though. i thought it might be built for calif hense no exh tips. thanks for the reply.

Regarding the exhaust tips, I seem to remember coming across a bit of info that gave me the impression that only Hemi RR's in '68 had the tips, in fact all Hemis in '68 had them. In '69 they were available on any engined RR with the proper group ordered.
