Default ATF Fluid ???

I have a performance rebuilt 727 with a Trans-go shift kit. I am wondering what fluid to use. I have been told by various people in the "Mopar World" to use Everything from non deteregent 30 W engine oil , to mercon/dexron 3 , to Type F as well as ATF3 or ATF4 or even a mix of What Ever !!! WTF is going on !!! I was thinking ATF3 But now I really don't know for Sure. Maybe I should just go to the local Mopar dealer. I never thought a simple question could get so many different answers

ATF 3. Type F or Dex III will work also, but unless Transgo recommends something other than the factory ATF 3, stick with that. Are you serious? Someone actually suggested using 30W non-detergent motor oil?

Uhh, we've done this trick on our mud racing trucks, except we used 1 qt. 10-30W Castrol GTX (not non-detergent) and 5 qts ATF type F. It does make em shift hard . I wouldn't recommend it for a vehicle you actually need to drive, but on a mud truck it works wonders.

I have heard that ATF4 is a full synthetic and was developed more or less as a life time fluid. I don't know if that is true, But if ATF3 and ATF4 are both recommended for a 727 I think I would use ATF3 with a Couple Qt's ATF4 just to get some of the Advantages of a Synthetic

Default Atf +4

Is 25% synthetic. My recomend is for full synthetic fluid. Less breakdown, more stable with heat and cold, superior lubricity. I use it in all gear boxes, all my vehicles.

ATF-3 IMO
I believe Valvoline makes the syn trans fluid.
I've heard the type F was the stuff, but I've always used ATF-3.

Heres one for ya. A old school mechanic I've known for 40 years came into NAPA one day to get a trans filter and trans fluid. I asked if that was all he needed, "good you asked, need some STP for the tranny to". There were two guys waiting, they looked at me and we all looked at Lester. I asked, "STP in a automatic?". Yep. He asked what was biggest reason trannys failed? We all said heat. Yep, and the STP keeps the spools and anything else steel from sticking. A spool doesn't open all the way, less oil pressure to clutch packs and you burn'em up. "I've used more STP in automatics then engines".
I believe him. When I serviced wifes car, did the STP thing. Actually shifts better and alittle firmer.
Now before you guys say bullhockey, this is the same guy that says the best carbs are thermoquads and quadrajets, especially the electric quadrajets.
"Most guys don't understand them so they say they're junk". He helped me set up my 1987 Aerocoupe 305 with the electric quad. AC on, 70-80 mph all the way to Daytona.....21 to 22 MPG!!!
I wish I could download Lester's brain. When these old school guys are gone it will be a great loss.

Default Synthetic sources

Jack, most ATF refiners also make syn. Mobil 1, Amsoil, Royal Purple, Castrol, Valvoline and Red Line. My choice is Red Line, which is the choice of most serious pro drag and circle racers. All cost about the same.

Thanks Guy's Interesting stuff about the STP !!! I was looking at Valvoline ATF today and it is full synthetic and $ 6 a bottle I don't know for sure, But I think the other one's Peg Leg mentioned are around 9-12 a bottle. I looked at the dip stick and it say's use Dexron fluid only. I think I need about 10 bottles so I guess it depends on how cheap I feel when I go to the store $60 or $100 + Most likely Valvoline ATF 4 Full Synthetic and Maybe a bottle of STP

I use type F. Noticed a little firmer shifts.
