Default What speeds should my tranny shift ?

Hi Everyone,

I just got done replacing my timing chain and i put a performer intake on with an eddy 600 4 bbl carb. My car is a 1969 plymouth satellite with a 318 motor, auto trans..

I need to know approx. how fast i should be going when my tranny shifts gears ?
Hopefully i can get it done this week end.

Thanks in advance !!

At what throttle settings? Half? Full? Shift points are determined by the proper adjustment of the throttle pressure linkage. (often referred to as kick down linkage) This subject has been argued many times on this board. You can either do a search or sit tight. I am sure the answers will start pouring in shortly.

Hi Dick,

I am trying to adjust my throttle kick down linkage at regular driving speeds on the road. I want to get it right so i don't do any damage to my tranny.

Thanks........I will do some searching.

Shift points aren't determined by vehicle speed. Different gear ratios/tire sizes will change the speed of the shift point.

With the carb wide open, adjust the kickdown to be all the way back. Take her out for a drive. If the shifts are too high/harsh for your taste, then back it down a little. Keep doing this, until the shift is where you are comfortable with it.

Default Choices

Ed's description of initial adjustment is right on. I can only add, that backing off the initial adjustment too far, will slowly damage the clutch pack from insufficient hydraulic pressure. With the average street stock gears of around 2.76 to 3.23, it should shift one/two at 15 MPHG, and 2/3 at 25 MPH, with normal acceleration.
