Question

Hi, I am in need of some opinions from guys who actually know what they are doing, (unlike all the people here in Chevytown).
I own a 1970 Charger R/T with a '73 440 and a '70 Six Pack setup. The aftermarket cam that the last owner put in has bitten the dust, and must be replaced.
The car has a 727, 8 3/4 rear, and 3.23 gears. It is mostly stock.
The car is driven almost daily, but sees the strip on occasion. My main concern is retaining the streetability, yet give it a horsepower boost that will still allow me to outrun every Shivvy in town. I don't wan't a lumpy idle, and it must not be too crazy. Just something a with a little more kick than the original.
I am eagerly awaiting ideas, as the car goes to the shop on the 9th of this month. And I am stuck driving/pushing a 4 banger 86 Camaro that can't pull its own weight until I get this worked out.

I take it you have stock comp and intake and exhaust along with stock converter,I'd run the 455/272(P4286677)or the 383/440 magnum cam(P44552783)450/458 268/284 both of these will work well in a stock low comp motor, they will have a hint of a lope at idle but not enough to sit there and shake you to death...PRO..

I'd call Hughes or Comp Cams, and tell them what you've got. The MP cam kits are a little cheaper, but I guarantee a Hughes will run harder than a MP cam with similar specs. Besides, how important is $30 saved when you're gonna be driving it for the next 5 years? My 440+6 is getting a small Hughes solid cam when the time comes. I know some guys think the old MP cams were ground by God himself, and have decent luck with them, but that's my opinion.

Hhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmm, decisions, decisions,. Thanks for the responses guys. I'm gonna have more time to decide now that the guy never showed up to tow it to the shop today.
I will most likely go with the MoPar Performance cam that PRO suggested. I like to keep my car all Chrysler. That way I KNOW I won't have any trouble with that part again.

I've got a 67 Barracuda with a near-stock 360, 9:1 compression, factory 340 hi-po exhaust manifolds, 3.23 gears and the small block counterpart to the 4286677 cam. Runs mid-13's. This is a great cam for a street-driven car with street gears, stock exhaust and not too much compression ratio. The specs sound similar to the stock cam, but it is a newer design with a quicker rate of lift (more flow with similar duration) plus a narrower lobe separation (which gives it a choppier idle but a stronger mid-range).

Having said that, however, the 4286677 design itself is getting pretty old. I think I'm going to try a Hughes cam in my next project, a stroker 383 that's going into my 64 Polara convertible.

Just because Mopar Performance sells a part doesn't mean it's a "Chrysler" part. Very little if any of their stuff is made in any Chrysler factory; it's all outsourced. I haven't had any problems with their cams, but some of their stuff is junk. Or--like their so-called 9:1 pistons--are not high performance parts at all and shouldn't even be in the catalog.

Just my two cents worth. I agree that you can't go wrong with the 4286677 cam. But I suspect that Sublime 70 is right about the Hughes cams.

I have no problems at all in the cam selections that everyone has made.If anybody has noticed,I usually recommend the Mopar 280/480 cam.I've used several of these in various 383's and 440's in the last 17 years and really since 1972,when my Dad used them.A lot of people say this cam gives a ragged or real choppy idle, and won't work with 3.23's or stock exhaust system.Well let me tell you that ain't the truth.I've used this cam with several different induction systems on my own 1970 Road Runner, and the last setup I tried just to see if it WOULDN'T work.I used the factory 383 intake, and the OEM 585cfm Holley carb, and the stock exhaust with 3.23's and a 4-speed.It worked just fine.I did have to make some adjustments to that little Holley,I used a nozzle type squirter and I modified the power valve channel restriction a bit,but that and some re-jetting is all I did. That car would idle at 800 rpm just as smooth as silk. There was a bit of "lope" to it,but not like you'd think. It would get 16mpg too.Oh I did change the vac sec spring in the Holley too.I looked at it this way...stock eliminator cars have to use the stock intake and carb and get to use a big cam,yet they run great,so why couldn't I do this on a street car and have the same results?? Plus it was awesome when I'd pop the hood and let everybody see my "stock" 383.
