Default crazy problem

I got a engine test stand for my birthday, thanks to my wife. I wired it it up like in the attachment below.hears my prob, with the terminal for the neutral safty switch grounded like in the dia.when I flip the ign. switch the engine starts turning over. next with the neutral safty switch ungrounded I turn on the ign. on and crank the engine, no start but while cranking I turn the ign. off and I get a fire.so I unhooked the coil wire from the cap, grounded it and I get one spark when I turn the ign. off. just one spark. someone said it was the ballast res., changed it same results. anyone help? thanks

Is this the same problem you posted about on Vintage Moparchat?

If the starter cranks with the neutral switch wire un-grounded, you have something mis-wired. The neutral switch grounds the starter relay coil, and the ign switch feeds it +12 V.
I'd check all wiring to find the problem. Start over from scratch.

U are refering to a no spark problem I take it. Sounds to me like the distributor is not sending a pulse signal. most likely the pickup coil or you miss wired the ECU.

Looking at the schematic I don't see how it's supposed to work, the starter switch is bypassing the relay and energizing the starter directly. To make the relay function the starter button needs to be hooked to the empty terminal opposite the one that's grounded.

John, I see what they are doing with the relay. They are NOT using for a starter relay, but rather for an IGN n2 (resistor bypass).

The start switch should pull in the relay as well as engage the starter, and the relay should feed hot 12V past the ballast.

HOWEVER, I haven't kept up with all the backyard variations on Mopar ignition---I wire mine the "original way" and so I'd be suspicious of how the ECU is wired?

(Can someone post a schematic of this same hookup that they KNOW works?)

That's what I thought at first but the terminal needed to energize the relay is empty in the schematic.

The spade terminal next to the grounded terminal needs to get power to energize the relay, a jumper wire from the starter to that terminal would energize the relay and close the contacts for the rewsistor bypass.

I think John is right about how the relay is hooked up. I still think the motor sould still fire, although the spark will be weaker due to the full 12 volts not going to the coil. I had the same one spark problem that you described and I adjusted my reluctor clearance and I had all kinds of spark.
