Default Which axles can be resplined?

To fit an 8¾ rear end an A-body and to use the B-body PCD (and brakes), I need to find some axles from a B-body that can be resplined.

Most of these seem to be tapered back behind the spline, and for far enough back that it can't be done.

Does anyone know what model years had the axles without the necked down section?

Here's a diagram from the autohobbydigest site, the centre axle is what I'm after:

I've had friends that used c-body axles that were cut and re splined but not b-body.
You can use your b-body brakes with them.
I do have a set of non tapered b-body axles, think they are out of a 69 cornet. Sorry I don't recall if and what years were tapered or not.

Of course they do taper just before spline like a-body does which may be why you shouldn't use them[being that they would have to be welded up in order to spline them].
But honestly this is something I have not messed with I've always just bought new ones.

As there are no A-body rear ends in Australia, or at least none were sold here, and as there was a lot of B-body (and C-body for that matter) sold here, about 1000 cars a year, the resplining would seem to be more logical than importing and then changing the stud pattern.

The first 3 inches of the axle shaft are too small for resplining so the axle has to be at least 3" longer than the desired final length.

In the case of the A body, the finished shaft length is 28" so the donor shaft has to be at least 31". Shorter shafts sometimes work if they don't have a step-down outboard if the splines but it's iffy.

Some candidates:

'71-'73 B body wagon= 31 21/64"

'70-'73 C body= 31 21/64" (and '69 wagon)

'70-'74 E body = 29 31/32"

'65-'71 D100= 31 1/8"

'72-'74 D100= 31 21/64

Is that even on the ones shown as being parallel all the way along, John?

That's why I specified stepped down shafts, the ones without the stepdown will usually work if they're not the full 3" longer but the shafts aren't always round when you get away from the splined area. You can't really tell if they're round until they're set up in a lathe and a cut is taken, I've had some that look like they'll work but when they're turned down to make them round they are below minimum diameter for resplining.

In the pic below you can see how unmachined part of the shaft varies in roundness.

Thanks for that, John...

Even though I've now decided to put this idea aside for at least a while, it would be interesting to know more for future reference or for the benefit of others.

Looking at your pic it seems that machining them isn't a big problem? So that if someone found axles that were okay to do, then resplining wouldn't be a big issue?

How much of the spline fits into the side gear? It looks like only about 1/2 of the total spline fits in there. If you wanted a 1 inch shorter axle, could you just lop off 1 inch? I could use an easy 1 inch under there.

Going by the figures posted, the minimum to be cut off would be close to 2"...

I have sold sets of c body and a100 (same) axles that were shortened and resplined to A body length, I also have some 65 to 74 axles out of dodge trucks that would also work, they are wider yet.
