Distributor
Guys,
Without causing WWIII, I would like to hear some thoughts on what kind of ignition system I will need for my application. Here are the stats: 71 Charger; Engine: 383 HP; Intake: Edelbrock Performer Transmission: 727 with 2600 stahl; engine has been bored 30 over, roller rockers 1.5, hyd cam (Hughes) with .523 lift; KB pistons and Eagle rods; HP = 500. Right now I am using a dual point Mallory dist. I would like to go pointless this car will be used mainly on the street. Thanks in advance for all your help. |

I put the Pertronix billet dist in my 440, 400hp or better, hot street. What I like is one hot wire hook-up. I bypassed key switch, ballast and use a toogle switch to power dist. It has adjustable mechanical advance and different advance springs with it. You can drive just the coil or it will fire CD box to fire the coil. Only 2 wires come out of dist. They have matched coil for this dist also. Check it out at www.pertronix.com.

Factory electronic conversion kit would work fine.
But I would just get the MSD 6a along with pro billet or ready to run billet distributor and blaster 2 coil. Just what I recommend. |

Street/strip set up; MP distributor with a Chrome box and proper ballast resister. Allways worked well for me.
I haven't found any meaningful gain with any other ignition system except a Jacobs. On the street; A multi spark system is very good in the low RPM range for the added mileage and cleaner running engine/plugs with less smog out the tail pipe. Good for smaller(ish) type street grind cams where some mileage is of concern. |

Mallory also has an electronic conversion kit for your distributor that replaces the dual point system. The dual point was good for its day, but they can be a hassle sometimes. All the above ignitions are good as well. If you decide to switch distributors, I'd look for one that has vacuum advance since you're using it mostly for street. Alot of people will disagree I'm sure, but vacuum advance is a good idea for street use & will not negatively affect performance if properly adjusted.

I dont know the specs of any of these systems, or what performs the best, and only have experiance with Mallory, but weve had a Mallory HyFire and Unilite conversion on the 68' with a 383, only street use, mild cam. it lasted about 3 years without problems, the module stopped working because the shutter rubbed against the recieving sensor. Ill be putting the same system in, but with a rev limiter in the duster.

So true that a vacuum advance distributor is good for a street ride. It will help add mileage as well. |
