4 wheel disc brakes dragging?
I hope someone has experience with 4 wheel disc brakes and can help. I finally have my 56 Plymouth running. When I try to move it I have to give it a fair amount of gas to get it rolling. The emergency brake handle (lokar) is in the off position. The car has a Fatman fabrications front end that runs a mix of Ford and GM components for the disc brakes. The rear system is a Master Power Brakes set-up for my Dana 60 rear end. It uses Cadillac El Dorado calipers and rotors with a complete Lokar e-brake set-up. It has a proportioning valve but no residual check valves in the line. The brakes work fine.
The mechanic that did a lot of the engine and brake work says I need a looser torque convertor. I think the car acts like the emergency brake is on even though the handle show it off. Has anyone had any experience like this? Any idea how to diagnos it? Thanks, Doug |

If the car has sat for a while, and with alot of humidity. I see that your in Florida. You probably have surface rust on your rotors causing them to drag alot. And if it has sat for long enough even possibly rust in and around the caliper piston. For the surface rust on the rotors I would just drive it a little bit and see if that clears it up.

What proportioning valve are you using?
I saw a thread on moparts where a member had a problem with a repro one. here's a link http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/...ue#Post4504429 |

Your brake pedal might not be returning all the way up, I would check that, and I would also check to see if the ebrake cables are tought, maybe disconnect them to see if it helps. maybe they need an adjustment.

To diagnose:
Park on a bit of a slope, see how it rolls. |

The part of Florida he is in has no slope! |

My 2850# '65 A auto has huge rolling resistance, always had even in bone stock flavor and I even changed the trans from the 2 pump design. My '57 Fairlane was a far easier push! I could just lean on that and it would move. I never got it. I have a fairly loose convertor by driver standard, an MP175K and it doesnt even creep in idle I have to run it up to about 1500 to get it rolling, and then I can let off and itll slow to a stop! I dont get it. Checked each wheel off the ground and they all turn as good as a well adjusted drum brake car can, although discs tend to drag a smidge by design.

I am running a Stainless Steel Brakes proportioning valave and their tech service states that no residual pressure is applied by their unit. I also know there are no residual check valves in the line.
I think pishta is experiencing the same issue I am from his post. Thanks for the hill suggestion but unfortunatley Rug_Trucker is right. Its flat as a pancake down here. Will keep y'all posted. Thanks for your help. Doug |

Get up to speed on a straightaway, then pop the tranny in neutral. Depending on how quickly it slows down that should tell you whether it's your brakes or your drivetrain.
