I have found some that is in the process of making a low gear set for the 46RE trans.
I would think this would help quite a bit getting my heavy weight moving. 1st would change from 2.45:1 to 2.77:1 2nd " " " 1.45:1 to 1.54:1 3rd and overdrive (4th) would remain the same. This is accomplished with the making of new planetary gear set. (The shop is called A&A transmissions. He has had this gear set for the older trans but were modified gear sets from the 44RE trans to fit the older 727A transmission) His modified gears are for drag racing he stated the probably would not live up to daily driving but has since ventured into making NOT modifing one. At the time I called him he did not know if it would affect the stock shift points or if he would need some PCM modification to handle it. Does anyone know if it would affect the PCM with the gear ratio of the trans changed. I have the 3.92 gears and the change in the first gear ratio would be like having a 4.43:1 final drive ratio in first gear and 4.16:1 in second. No change in 3rd or 4th to affect overall gas milage or towing. I would think this would be a good thing wouldn't it? As Dodge use something like 3.00:1 first gear(trans ratio) behind the new 4.7L otherwise I don't think it would be as peppy as it is. Also I think c&^%y has a 3.06 first gear ratio and F*&D uses 2.84 for their trucks. Price tag last I knew would be approx $1500. |

I am also interested in this and have been watching the AA website:
http://www.aandatrans.com/catalog/Ca...ASP?Category=5 The welded together 'stepped' sungear adapted from the original Chrysler design 998/999/42RE into the bigger 727 that AA has had available previously - has not gotten good reviews for durability on the Moparts web board. http://216.218.201.10/cgi-bin/forumd...nswer&number=1 There are some very experienced tranny rebuilders on this board who have examined that gearset mod and didn't feel confident about it. AA's trans products in general are highly respected though. Don't forget that the torque converter makes calling the first gear '2.45 ratio' is kinda unrealistic. The torque converter slips and 'torque multiplies' so that the 2.45 first gear in an automatic transmission is more like a 3.00 to 4.00 ratio first gear in a manual transmission. This is also greatly affected by the stall speed of the torque converter used. [This message has been edited by HankL (edited January 14, 2001).] |

Thanks for the reply. I did not know he had a website (though when I called last summer I did not bother to ask.) He (Rick) had said that he was working on designing and getting a new gear set that would live under daily driving. I didn't figure the modified ones looked to cool for the street. He stated that maybe this winter he would have more info. Looks like I will shoot him an e-mail to see where his is at on it. |
