Default 440 steel crank question

Have a 440 steel crank out ov a counter rotating Boat engine,,,The surface wher the rear seal rides iz backasswardz(if used in a std rotation engine)....

what iz tha general sensus ov welding up the backasswards oil jurnal, and turn it back down to smooth???....

Why wouldn't a smooth journal seel??...I deel with Hipo outboards and all thier seel'in surfaces are smooth, and turn 12K rpm!!!....

Sho would like to be able to use this crank!!!....

The grooves at rotation push the oil back into the crankcase like an auger, correct? I dont know if a smooth surface would work back there as it is always in oil due to the acceleration. Are you using a rope seal or a rubber lip seal? tried both?

Yea, the grooves on tha counter rotating crank are backwards, and in a std rotation mote would actually pull oil out the mota....I juss figger'd they wuz sum smarter peopelz out ther that would know if it wuz possible to use a smooth seel surface, or the oil would be forced out the seel by acceleration...a 440 seel iz alwayz submerged unless a deep pan iz used....

I quess tha CR crank would make a good mail box post!!

I have heard people just polishing them out. The grooves really are only necessary for old style rope seals, and the modern lip seals prefer smotth surface. The grooves aren't deep, and I have heard people just polishing them smooth with good results, without adding any material.
