Has any body installed headers on an '87 V-6 Dakota? I was wondering about what brands are available and the performance gained. My 4X4 is in need of some more oompa to get it going.

Herc,
I looked into getting a set of headers a while ago for my truck, but never did get them, the cost was a little more than I wanted to spend.
You can check with several places. Here's a list of companies that still makes headers for the pre-Magnum Dakota to the best of my knowledge. You'll just have to call and verify that they indeed do still make them, and what the price is. You may also want to ask what all is included in that price. For instance, paying a few bucks more to get a nice mandrel bent Y-pipe to go from the headers to the factory exahust system would be well worth it. Anyway, that's up to you.
Here's some places to try:
1. Mopar Performance
2. Edelbrock (probably available thrugh Summit Racing or Jeg's)
3. Pacesetter (phone 602-266-1964) when I called them they wanted $208 for a set
4. Clifford Performance (909-734-3310)
5. Doug Thorley (1-800-719-8100)

As far as the performance benefit, I don't know. Like I said, I looked at the prices and just sort of figured that it wasn't worth the expense and headache of mating the headers to the original exhaust for all the more I was going to gain, but it may be worth it to you. Your call. You can figure that the performance benefit is roughly 3/4's of what the benefit would be to a 318 fitted with headers, since the 3.9 is 3/4's of a 318. So ballpark figures say about 10-12 more horsepower, maybe more if you've done any other improvements to the engine or exhaust system. Low-restriction muffler or cat-back system, Low-restriction air filter, aftermarket multi-spark ignition system, etc.

Good Luck and let us know what you find out!
