Default i-Book issues....

My roommate has an Apple i-Book that was bought in 2002, and the thing just won't boot up anymore. It could be linked to a possible power surge due to a puppy chewing on the power cord.... I fixed the power cord, but when I start it up, it just flashes a "file" image with a question mark in it. I don't know ANYTHING about Apple stuff but I figured it may mean that it can't find a boot disk.

Question: Is there a way to start this in safe mode such as can be done on Windows?

Don't know nuthin' 'bout Mac's. Know someone who does, but he's on DIAL-UP, 60 miles south of here. Sounds like it's lost the boot file on the HD. Hank could proabably tell you the fix in two minutes, but I can't get him to answer his messages and his cell #'s no good now. Sorry. I tried.
