milling J heads
hey everybody. i was just wondering how much you can shave off of a J-head safely???? i need to get compression on a recently rebuilt motor with piston that are too deep in the bores.

That won't do the squish much good...
Too late to mill the block? Fit longer rods? Offset grind the crank (mild stroke with undersize bearings)? Shame you didn't realise earlier, methinks you're in a grossly unwanted period of damage control.. |

okay.......... I will try asking a different way. here it goes...... I recently purchase a 360 out of a 1987 3500 van from a salvage yard. The engine is a remanufactured 1978. I removed the heads and have seen that the cylinders have virtually no wear on them. it would appear that a remanufactured engine was installed shortly before the van met its demise. the problem is that the pistons are rather deep in the bores. I would like to put a pair of J-heads on this motor without having to spend any money on the bottem end. I want to have as close to 9 to 1 compression as i can. the heads are 71 cc. to achieve 8.8 to 1, I would have to shave050 off of the heads. I want to know how much can be safely milled off of the Jheads.

0.050 is nothing to be concerned with. You will need to take about 0.048 off the intake face as well to get the manifold to line up correctly.

Good answer Ray (OUI!)
aarracer, Good answer! DusterMan360 Since the engine has nearly zero wear, would a set of Hyper U pistons and a balance job be too much money? Now that you have extra info posted, a set of , for example, KB 107 pistons at approx. $200 and a balance job (Price changes locally) would give you a big bump in the ratio. Fed-Mougal also has a set of hyper U pistons that are slightly shorter for less compresion. Summit has them listed as a piston and ring combo for a little more than the KB's without rings. |

I had .060 taken off of my J heads, no problems. For every .010 taken off the head, .0095 off the intake face. My machinest went with the chevy spec, which must be less. Intake was a little hard to line up the bolts. Hard to find a good Mopar machinest........................
