Probably running rich due to a lack of air. It's choking itself.

Even a 600 cfm carb should run OK on a 440,except on the top end, where it will definately run out of air!. There are many variables here!. Is the compression good? Does it have good ignition? Vaccum leaks? Weak valvesprings? Timming and advance curve set up properly? I would say after 38 yrs it may be time to address everything!. First thing i would do,is to switch the carb to at LEAST a 750 cfm rating!

It sounds like the car is shot. Ill take it off your hands so that you have more room in the garage. Youll have to pay me to haul it away for you though....

I agree, not enough info. Give us some more details.

My 72 owners manual says for low power, check: timing, dist rotor, warn dist shaft or cam, bad plugs, dirt or water in fuel line, carb floats not set right, bad fuel pump, incorrect valve timing, blown head gasket, low compression, burned or bad valves, bad coil or condenser, faulty ignition cables.
