88 Dakota Auto Trans V6 Case cracked???

I have the above truck and my transmission cracked about an inch from where it mounts to the engine all the way across the top. Some friends stated they have never seen it happen. Any suggestions as to what could have caused it? It is in good shape otherwise with 140XXX miles on it. Any suggestions appreciated.
