I had the same problems with a 1991 3.9 in my dakota, until one day I was driving down the freeway and it blew up. You get 15 mpg, man that's good. On a good day I maybe get 8 or 9 mpg,and that's taking it easy.

I have a 92 dakota with the same problem.I worked at chrysler dealer for two and half years as a tranny specialist and the problem with the over drive is that the main feed hole from the trans to the overdrive unit isn't big enough to supply the overdrive when the fluid is cold. If you would like some more info on this problem and how to make It some what better email me :weirman_red@yahoo.com

Try changing out your oxygen sensors. My 92' had the same problem. I changed out the oxygen sensor and my gas mileage went up to about 18 miles per gallon. Also if you have black smoke/carbon looking stuff coming out your tailpipe, it is a sure bet it is your oxygen sensors. Mine messed up again because my head/gasket is blown. The antifreeze will blow out these sensors pretty quick.
