Hello,
I need some technical advice, perhaps you can help me? I am installing a 528" 640hp hemi into my '70 hemicuda. I am using a pair of new 9636 Carter AFB Competition Series carbs on the stock manifold. The engine has a mild hydraulic cam, 10:1 compression and aluminum heads. I am using stock cast iron exhaust manifolds to keep the appearance stock.(The car is in show condition and driven only on the street, and occasional run up the track.) These carbs work fine on my friends 426 hemi '68 Charger. So surely they need some alterations to work OK on my 528" engine? I will be greatful for any advice on where to begin... I would think that he stock exhaust would be WAYYY restrictive toward the upper/Mid RPM band.
Much less you can barly see the headers when you look into the engine bay. i would doubt if headers would affect the "Stock" appearance much. but I guess I could be wrong...Dont own a hemi cuda, but i have seen a couple 68 B-Bodies up close and not much more than the vavle coveres and air cleaner could be seen clearly unless you crawled under the dang things. Wow. 640 hp with a stock intake and stock exhaust ( and a mild hyd). I am interested in how you were able to build (and determine that) Hp. ( I am jealous !)

'nice to hear from you. I asked ray Barton to build the engine for me. It made 640hp on his dyno. I'm using cast iron exhaust manifolds, (I don't like headers) and a 2 1/2" TTI exhaust system. I hope it'll be OK. I was concerned about the carbs needing re-jetting maybe to suit the bigger engine. regards Jim Wilson (Mopars live in England too!) (I also have a '68 Hemi Charger.) |

thanks for the reply. I agree the stock manifolds will be restrictive, I would like to avoid running headers if I can. I wonder if these carbs will work OK on this engine straight out of the box? I guess I'll try it and see.. Jim |

Jim, I think all you can expect is speculation until you actually run the beast.Even the dyno wouldn't work unless you had manifolds and the Carters on the motor for the pulls. Add to that the chassis particulars and....
Tell me how the engine works when you get it done.I'm soon undertaking a similar path and need feedback while it's still relative. Thanks, and good luck! Marc |

Hey Jim(the lucky dog who has a 528 hemi)
What is your particular beef with headers. I know I hate the sealing that most headers give(because the flange is to thin and warps uner pressure) and the fact that you cant reach the damn plugs...which a hemi cures the last woe!!! If the sealing element is an issue..you can order headers with really thick flanges. And what Kind of carb set up and header set up did ol Ray have on the motor???? Did he have the pieces that you have?? |
