Cold Air Intake
I am looking at the Amsoil/Injen Cold Air Intake. The dyno-tuned for my vehicle part is appealing
but I can't find any test results. Testamonials only say "it felt like" and, I need more than that. I would appreciate any feedback on your experiences. |

Most any cold air intake is an improvement in both HP/torque and air filtration, and maybe a MPG of mileage. The "added power" is generally about 5 HP, but you usually get better air filtration which adds engine life. It can't hurt, and if the price is reasonable, I'd do it. Most of the cold air intakes add some "snap" to the throttle response...that alone may be worth the money.

The idea behind cold air intakes regardless of the manufacturer, is to provide an uncompromised (mostly) free breathing intake tract. The factory intake is restrictive and silence to make it quiet, compact and cheap to produce. I'm dubious about the HP claims people make by just simply adding a CAI. If anything there might be a gain in the upper RPM range when the factory intake tract becomes restrictive. If your engine is modded then your engine will definitely benefit from a CAI.

what about an old school, 10inch open element ? think there would be an improvement over stock?

1. As in Black Powder, Walkercolt?
You have iterated what I have learned. 2. Ditto, Dr. R. The Dyno graph from Injen shows there is nothing happening below 2,500 RPM and my engine lives at 2,000 RPM. I theorize that the slight ram affect of a long straight pipe, even at low RPM's might make a slight improvement and, as you said, more than doubling the filter area ought to improve filtration and allow easier breathing. Below is the installation. 3. moparman, I think the reason it is 'old school' is because it is. The number one problem with the old carb mounted air cleaner is that it is a giant heat-sink. Besides....no room. The Dyno: http://www.amsoil.com/Products/injen...PF2019dyno.gif The Installation: http://www.amsoil.com/Products/injen...talled_900.jpg |

Never believe the I felt the performance gains. You can't feel a 20hp gain in a 4000lb car....rediculous.

No! NO! NO!
Don't say THAT! Of course you can 'feeeel' 20 HP. |

I installed Ram Air / Cold Air intake on my '68 Dart (383). You can definitely feel the difference of the Cold Air intake. Throttle response feels crisper at all RPMs and the Dart coasts longer when coasting to a stop (I have a 727 Aurto trans). The car almost feels as if one is coasting down a slight incline...
I have pics at the Big Block Dart site, under the Ram Air thread title. I can't post pics or links here because my post count is too low. Sorry about that. |
