Smile Rack and pinion steering for Mopar A-Body

Can enyone out there help with where I can get a rack and pinion kit for my 67 Dart? I do not want to use a tube K member with coilovers. I love my Mopar Performance torsion suspension.

May I ask you why you are planning to convert only the steering? I don't know of any "bolt on" rack & pinion set up for A-bodies, for E-bodies there is one available. However, itäs a rear steer just like the factory steering, so there is really not much room gaioned with the conversion. There may be others, but do they really work as planned? better than the stock with quick ratio?

You could get one with a tube K frame set up from magnumforce, but unless your going drag racing and you need the weight reduction, it's a waste of time and money.

I need the space for the headers on my R5P7 (its Wide), but I still want it to be a MOPAR with torsion bars :-) I have been looking at K Member tubeframe but it ain't MOPAR.... Just Suspension says they will be able to suply me with a rack and pinion at the end of the year. And if the need for space was not needed, I would for sure used a stock with quick ratio

The only straight up conversion kit that I know of is made by Unisteer. They only have kits for B and E bodies.

How about swapping the hubs and putting the rack under the sway bar mount like tubular K is? You would have to make sure the pinion ends up under the rack or your steering would be backwards! Im sure this would play havoc on all the designed angles and bumpsteer but it WOULD clear the way for headers especially if you had a power box. I looked into this years ago and was toying with putting one under the pan and just tying into the original tie rods but gave up on it as the steering joint would end up going almost straight down through the floorboard. This was trying to get around the limited room for big block headers with a steering box so close to the block in my 65' A.

I have been trough fenderwell headers in my mind, but they would be to long for use with a R5P7 engine on high RPM... And Yes there is a power box in the car, and it is just way to big to stay there.

check these instructions out, its almost a blueprint on how to make your own using a salvaged rack and some special fabbed pieces.

and download the PDF file.

Yes, let us know 'cause my steering box has a nasty high spot and the rest of the steering link is pretty rickety.

Plenty of Aussie A-bodies get rack and pinion conversions, many for the same reason... but mostly because the steering box setup here is mounted on the chassis rail and rail cracking and rusting is a big problem.

Racks from Holdens are commonly used.
