Default Spark Plugs

Iridium Spark Plugs

Iridium is a precious, silver-white metal and one of the densest materials found on earth. The natural properties of Iridium offered the opportunity to create one of the world's finest spark plugs. The result are spark plugs that require less voltage to spark, burns fuel more efficiently, sparks at leaner air/fuel mixtures, and delivers higher horsepower and better gas mileage.

ok, ok.

But why does the decal on the engine scream at me:

USE IRIDIUM SPARK PLUGS ONLY

Lots of reasons. Long life is usually the reason car co. spec them nowadays, so you can go 50,000+ miles without changing them. In some cases only iridium plugs come in the proper heat range. Iridium plugs electrodes cool much faster than other plugs, so they may be required to protect the head and pistons too. Then there are electrical requirements too. Cars and trucks with the new "plug coil pacs" aren't like the old big coils we're used to. I remember when N-D came around with the iridium plugs for the old Yamaha TZ-750 two-stroke race bikes. They promised they wouldn't oil-foul, and they didn't, but "reading" plugs and getting the right heat range and the right oil/fuel ratio was a matter of starting from scratch. But they worked, and we learned about them. Off-topic, but Dr. Jacobs some years back(of Jacobs Ignitions) built a micro-wave ignition system for his 396 Chevelle SS hot-rod. Brother, did it ever work! Added like 50HP at the rear-wheels, but he figured the system cost $50,000, and NASCAR, NHRA etc. wouldn't play, and require "spark ignition systems". At one time, the Indy 500 was where "innovations" like this were tested, but of course now, it's all one engine, one gear box, two brands of chassis, everything but the paint jobs are the same.
