Default 76 newport demo derby

i'm running a 76 newport with a 400 in a demo derby, and i have a camshaft out of a 77 or 78 440 rv motor, and was wondering if there are any differences in the camshaft, and if would pick up enough torque to be worth my time of changing it out i want to run zoomies on it, so if anybody has a set of old junk bb headers laying around that i can build a set of zoomies out of let me know. and i'm wanting to put either a holley truck avenger or lowrider avenger on it 670cfm, reason for the truck avenger or lowrider is when you hit most carbs will flood out from fuel sloshing out of the vents into the barrel flooding the engine, a gm rochester 2bbl is a good carb because they don't flood when hitting, but they really choke that 400 down and lose some power, and i don't really like having a gm part on my mopar. isn't the truck avenger desigined not to flood from fuel sloshing??

You won't gain anything from the cam swap... My brothers and I have had extremely good luck with the Ford Motorcraft 2bl carbs in tough truck racing and in rock crawling. They will choke down a little from a 4bl, however will have a lot more flow than a GM 2jet. Also have you considered propane? It never bobbles from bouncing.

extension on the vents?? you mean like a rubber hose?? but where could i run it to?? as hot as an engine can get in a derby i don't need all that extra fuel getting on it. car orginally had a 2bbl, i swapped it to a gm 2bbl off a 400 chevy i think it was, and it lost power noticed the same thing with a 318 i had in a 64 imperial once when i went from the stock 318 carb to a rochester. rampage what kind of carb you talking about?? maybe i can go to the parts house and swap out the rochester for it. what to look it up for?? i've heard of guys talking about it before. is it the larger bolt pattern 2bbl like the 400 has??

Yes any 2bl from a Ford like in the 70's. Ford used them on almost everything, from 302's to 400's. Yes they are the bigger bolt pattern, like the Holley 2bl. There are two versions of the carb, there was the 350cfm, which work good, and the 500cfm, however they are very rare to find.

I wouldnt use the 400. They dont hold heat well. I would use a sbm. Also dont use a holley go with a 2g carb or if you must use 4-barrell use a edelbrock 600 with an off-road kit. Also dont worry about losing power the 400 isnt exactly a powerhouse anyway. Its better to be cool and running than hot and stalled.

Any more specs on your build I might be able to give you some tips. Heres a link for the most popular derby headers http://www.decheaders.com/shop/index...ath=64_65_12_3

fatsack sounds like you've ran derbies before, car is only good for probably one more run, so i don't feel like changing out the engine. and in a derby i like to have plenty of power to manuever around, and get out of somebody's way when they are trying to hit me, and to have power to hit somebody before they get out of my way, i had a 64 imperial with a 78 318 with 456 gears, and that thing was badazz, won 3 in a row with it, til they banned imperials at the local tracks, car was good for probably 2 more runs. i'm probably gonna put the 4:56s under the newport if i have time, get rid of that junk rearend that's under it, i got an 83/4 out of an older newport. i wanna run the zoomies for one so it gets rid of alot of underhood heat, 2 is sounds good, and intimidates competitors, 3 helps you tell what each cylinder is doing and if the engine is still running, and 4 an increase in power. in a derbycar alot of azz is nice to have. get the wheels spinning enough so you can spin the azz end around and manuever to hit. i aint gonna lie, i love the 2g on a derby engine as far as the flooding goes, but my car definately lost power. noticed the same thing with the 318 in my imperial the 2gs you lose power.
