Default 408 info needed....

Hey guys I'm posting for a buddy, who doesn't believe in computers or the internet, so I do his dirty-work for him. Anyhow we are building his mud truck. a 2001 short bed Dakota, and he wants a 408. He isn't afraid of spending money, but wants to be smart about it. Now I know most of the dirty tricks and parts to buy for a big block, but am sort of ignorant when it comes to small blocks. Here are the specs on the rest of the truck

Full Manual 727 (no-tbrake) 5,000 stall 8" converter
NV242 transfercase
Dana 44 front spooled with 4.56 gears
Ford 9" rear spooled with 4.56 gears
38.5x11.00x15 TSL Boggers

Now I know that he needs to spend the bulk of his money on the heads, and I don't find a lot of selection on LA Mopars. However it looks to me like the best bang for the buck is the Indy 360-H1-1K complete kit. I mean it's $3600, but all the work is done for you, and it has everything with it and everything I've seen from Indy is top notch stuff. Is this a good setup, or is there better out there. I look at the Eddy heads and I'm not impressed.

We have also found the Forged Rotating Assembly with the Eagle Forged crank, Wiesco Pistons, and Eagle rods for around $1,500. And with 0 deck and the Indy heads it's supposed to be 11.5.1 compression ratio. He already has the Mallory 685 ignition, Pro-Billet Distributor, and Predator Carb. I'm assuming on the stock block you need to do the necessities such as Line boring, Sonic Checking, Magnufluxing, Squaring the block etc.I just don't know what kind of Oiling Mods the Small Block needs, what tolerances, What about the Main Caps and all of the dirty little secrets that need to happen? I do think I remember that you need to bush the lifter bores when going roller correct?

The camshaft we are looking at is the Comp 308R http://store.summitracing.com/partde...9&autoview=sku

I like the street rollers, because they work well, however are still stable enough you don't have to go ridiculous with everything. He is really wanting around 550 horses at the flywheel around 6,500 rpm. Any suggestions?

you should go with the r- block from mopar because your going well over 500hp with that selection of parts and need a block that will take that kind of punishment.

How much will a production block handle? I know on Big Blocks you can go with Aluminum Main caps and Girdles, which helps a bunch, do LA's have comparable mods? Also is it a horsepower limitation or a rpm limitation?

That particular one is a short deck block, not so good for a stroker or intake availability.
I really wouldn't be too worried about the block if it's checked and prepped properly, but it is close to its limits especially if everything isn't up to par.
I would suggest that before purchasing parts and machine work you should consult with Ryan Johnson at Shady Del Speed Shop. They've got a lot of experinece with different SB mopar combos and that's about the only thing they do, from mildish top wildish. http://www.shadydellspeedshop.com/

Default Best heads

Mopar R/T 5007950 is a killer good, high flow, 60cc big port head. 2.02/1.65 valves, no exhaust port obstructions, angle hold down bolt pattern.
For the bottom end, I'd use a girdle.
