Default Exhaust question

I'm redoing my exhaust on my 67 Belvedere, what size should I do?
It's a 440 HP manifolds 474 lift 280 degrees Purple shaft cam. 727 3000 stall transmission.
8.75 sure grip 355 gears. It will see the drag strip once a month. I was thinking
about 2.5 inch with flowmaster 40 series mufflers, or is 3 inch better?

With the manifolds, 2 1/2 is fine, I would think, but with the converter, 3" wont hurt anything.
I don't like the flowmasters, but thats just me, there is so much more out there!

2.5 inch if mandrel bent, otherwise 3 inch. However, a 3 inch system is really loud. Really only need 3 inch if knocking on 600 hp. Also, an X-pipe can get you 15 hp!

With manifolds, you really won't see a difference between 2½" and 3 ". I honestly question why you aren't looking at getting headers.

I do agree with TK about the flowmasters. I cannot stand the sound of them.

I,m only about 375-390 hp. So I will go with the 2.5 inch with a x-pipe.
Thanks for your help

I already have the manifolds just trying to keep the cost down.
Can always add headers down the road

I seriously doubt you will get 15HP from an X pipe, but it will quiet it.

I went from an X to an H, with longer tailpipes, and didn't notice no power loss............

Maybe a couple HP, but not 15.

Do you have the mufflers yet? Take a look at the aerochambers, and flowmasters simply don't flow.

Maybe E can dig up that chart he posted a long time ago on the flow of mufflers.

Take the heat riser out and braze holes shut on the pass side.
Then port match and polish out everything you can get to inside of your HP manifolds. I took over 3hrs on mine, its got to make a difference. Won't be as good as headers but alot less hassle in the long run. I finished it off with full length TTI 2 1/2" X-pipe system w/Dynomax Super Turbos.

OK, I could only find one chart that I posted. That was Aeroturbine vs stock on a 5.7 Hemi.

I did do a little web research and found the following information

http://www.broaderperformance.com/mu...flow_tests.htm
http://www.qsl.net/st0f/mufflers.htm

No I haven't bought the mufflers yet. The aerochambers look impressive
on their website.

Red face

Thanks for all your help guys. I'll go with the 2.5 inch with the aero chamber muffler. The guy at the speed shop says they flow way better then the flowmasters, even though he sell way more flowmasters. If I can find a used set of headers I'll go with them.
