This probably sounds pretty stupid coming from a dealer tech, but will 5.9l Magnum heads fit (and work properly) on an older (early 80's carbed) 360? I just happen to have a set lying around...

Yes and No, If you reference the magnum engine performance book it tells you exactly what you have to do to make it work. I think they are a direct bolt on except for the way the oiling is accomplished. It should be a matter of opening a few holes for oil. If you don't have acces to the magnum performance book, either buy one for $25 (kinda pricey) or let me know and I'll look up the exact info.

Don't the heads oil through the push rods on both motors? Please excuse my ignorance, I don't do alot on internal engine work...
Are you talking about the Mopar performance book, or the Magnum engine book? i have the Mopar book, but not a magnum book... ------------------ If all else fails, use a bigger hammer. 99 Intense Blue Dakota 4wd CC 5.2 ASE master, Daimler/Chrysler Gold Certified Auto Mechanic |

OK, Magnum heads will fit on old LA blocks. The heads oil through the tappets instead of the block though. If you use JEEP tappets which oil through the tappet, you can use the head. You can only use the single plane MAGNUM manifold or the MPI Injection setup on those heads though.
This is from the Magnum Engines book. |

You can use older style pre-magnum intake manifolds on the Magnum cyl heads if 'angle washers' are made to line up the attachment bolts to the 'more vertical' threaded holes on the Magnum cyl heads. This is detailed in the 'Magnum Manifesto' articles in Hot Rod magazine of Aug-Sept-Oct of 1998 by Al Kirchenbaum.
The intake manifold attaching bolts on Magnums are similar to the original 'vertical' intake manifold attaching bolts on the LA 273 V8 of the early 1960's. You also have to have made custom length pushrods to fit Magnum heads on older LA blocks. The Magnum cyl heads have about 62 cc combustion chambers versus the older 67 to 72 cc LA heads, so some compression ratio boost will occur - even more if the block or heads are milled prior to re-assembly. |

I think maybe I'll just port the original heads...

Emissions? We don't need no stinking emissions! actually, I'm not the least bit concerned with emissions, too old for this state... Designing my motor with Dyno2000 this weekend...
