Default Transmission Cooler

Can you run a Transmission cooler on it's own without going through the rad. The last owner ran it through the rad. I want to run it on it's own.

Default I think

Torque convertor heat dumps lots of heat into the coolant when the fluid is run through the radiator. The amount depends on the stall speed, with high stall creating more heat.
The finned aluminum coolers seem to be the most efficient, and I'm adding one to my Demon next month. I'm also removing fluid flow through my radiator. I will then have a fan cooled fluid chiller plus the finned 18" cooler for the tranny, and I expect to lower coolant temps by 10 degrees or so, because of my high stall convertor. Time for a tranny temp gauge to watch fluid temps.
I spoke with a fined round cooler manufacturer, and he advised that the cooler he builds be plumbed last in line, if going through the radiator. In other words, radiator first, then his cooler, then return to the tranny.

Kenny

I run my car with radiator cooler only for my 727. I run a 8" converter and load it antwhere from 2000 - 3500 rpm. The temperature gauge rarely registers any temperature from the transmission fluid. The extra cooler is usually only necessary when running a transmission brake.

When I worked in a transmission shop, my boss always said to run the external cooler first, then the radiator cooler, then back to the trans.

Geography plays a large part in cooler configuration, if it gets really cold in the winter the radiator helps warm the fluid where a stand-alone external cooler may prevent the trans from reaching operating temperature.

That would make the dual setup a good idea in those areas?

Sort of a best of both worlds deal... external cooler gets the job done, the rad warms the trans and doesn't cop too much heat when things are warmed up?

Yes, best to have both, because the "cooler" in the rad is also a warmer.

As for where, Every trans builder I have ever talked to, told me to put the cooler in after the radiator
