I'm just wondering, is my oil crap or is my engine destroying the oil.
The engine is a 269 c.i Hemi six, it was rebuilt about a year and half ago and it runs a 465 Holley. Before the rebuild I had no oil problems. Now the oil shows large amounts carbon contamination in approx 3000miles and within about 1000 the oil becomes slightly watery. I'm not sure if its the carb or the oil. Ever since the rebuild the carb has been a big pain in the ass, I have had to open up the IFR's to give me something of a respectable idle(it used to be extremely rich at idle!). The oil I run is Penrite multigrade 25-70, it is supposed to be one of the best mineral oils on the market. Any help would be appreciated |

well for a start your using the wrong oil.try using 20/w50 first then see how you go

also the oil helps in cleaning the bore.the reason the oil could be thining is that your getting bore wash from the carby running to fat...getting fuel in the oil will thin it out even though thats a thick grade oil

When I used the Penrite HPR 30 (20/60) It was even worse. I was also told I should run the HPR 40(25/70)by the Penrite rep, due to the larger bearing clearances on my older motor.
Is there any way to tell if its fuel contamination??? Thanks |

I had a similar sounding problem with a 70 Newport with a 383. After about 100 miles my oil was looking watery and thin. I was running a Holley 1850 carburetor. I was getting gas in my oil because the power valve had blown. Before replacing the power valve I ran the car with another carburetor (Edlebrock) that I knew was dialed in and the watery oil went away. I'm not familar with the Holley 465 carb but I agree with Rowdy that your probably running too rich even if its not a power valve problem. Hope this helps.

The best test I have come up with to determine if gas is in the oil is to smell the oil. Usually you can tell right away if it has a lot of gas in it. You may want to check the fuel pump also. If the thing starts leaking into the engine it will do the same thing. Good luck.

well you must have bearing clearances over 3 thou to be using almost a gear oil weight...sounds like you need to pull it back out and start all over
