Default torqueflite 727 question

guys,

finally got the kickdown rod in my Valiant. for some unknown reason, it wouldn't shift into 3rd gear.. then i tried adjusting the kickdown rod, it still wouldn't go into 3rd gwar.. it would either stay in second when i was on one end of the adjustment or go like there no 3rd.. like in neutral when i would let go the gas..

then i put the adjustement back where i had it before at first when i had the car and took it on the highway.. cranked up the car to about 60 mph and then it shifted into 3 rd gear kinda harsh.. then it started to shift into third a little better but still high into 2nd gear after a few tries..

went back home and gave it a little more.. it went more "normal".

any idea why it would shift like that ?

i drove around with no kickdown rod a few times to play with the carb but i would shift it into gears myself.. maybe that didn't help.

maybe i should flush it and put a new filter..

anybody know any issues that would make this supposedly indestructible tranny do that?

right now it shifts not too bad and i can cruise at low speeds in third..

i just wanna know what could have caused this ?

i'll get it flushed shortly.

How does reverse feel?? if reverse is real sluggish or choppy, then you got worn out clutches in the high gear pack.. I've had it happen before, 1st and 2nd are great, when it goes into third, it acts like neutral... or will shift into 3rd when cold, but when warmed up.. neutral again.. When I pulled that tranny apart, there was no clutch material left.. LOL

Without the kickdown damages the trans. You may have done so.
To determine that, adjust the rod correctly. At full throttle, the lever on the trans should be all the way back at it's full travel. Now drive with normal throttle pressure, and observe the shift points. Second should come at 15 MPH, third at 25 MPH.. Fine tune those shift points by carefully adjusting the rod.

went for a drive to test out again..

2nd to third was VERY high when cold and it got ALOT better when hot.

i could get 3rd gear at 25-30 mph when warmed up..

reverse is great and so is the rest..

i didn't go around very long without the KD rod.. barely 15 miles

Late part throttle upshifts mean the linkage is too long, shorten it and the shifts will occur at a lower road speed.

The factory spec for light throttle upshifts has the 2-3 upshift before 20 mph.

When the fluid is cold it is thicker and raises the line pressure (just like engine oil pressure is higher when cold). Higher line pressure results in higher throttle pressure and higher governor pressure which delays the shifts.

Modifications (like shift kits) tend to make the hot/cold pressure differential higher.

hell maybe it has a shift kit in it and i don't even know about it..

:S

does this still mean the tranny has problems ? because once hot, it shift just normally.. a little jerky but that's because it adjusted it more agreesively than normal..when ease off the adjustement it shifts alot more softly..

Adjust the linkage to suit yourself when warm, if it will kickdown at 40 mph from 3rd to 2nd at WOT you're OK.
