Help 318 Magnum Swap

I have a 92 318 magnum that I am planing on dropping in my 84 Dodge truck. Right now it is fuel injected so I need either a conversion kit or I need to change it over to a carburated engine. Any advise.

Default You'll like it

If you keep the injection. Just get all the sensors, fuel pump and wiring harness and transfer them to the older truck.

If you want to go carb, then you'll of course need a carb intake and carb, but the real trick.... well, not really a trick, the issue would be a feul pump since the Magnum engines do not have a provision for a mech. fuel pump.

What you can do is add an electric pump and regulator.

I have the intake, carb, distributor, coil, and fuel pump already. Just don't want to have to rewire the whole truck to drop the engine in. Someone told me that there was a kit that came with the computer that ran everything without having to rewire the truck.

I did this swap with a 360 magnum into a '95 Ramcharger.
It is really a breeze. MoPar makes a M1 dual plane Magnum intake that works great. Go with a LoKar kickdown cable for the tranny if you run an automatic.
Ideal carb is a Eddy 1406. Mount a Carter 7 lbs pressure fuel pump near the fuel tank. Be sure to put a filter BEFORE the pump since old trucks tend to have trash in the tank.
Use the old block type motor mounts. A old LA type distributor will work fine.
ALL the accessories off the magnum will work fine. The ONLY hicup I ran into was the power steering pump pulley touched the frame rail. I just notched the frame rail a 1/2" and that solved the problem. Magnums out of a Grand Cherokee have a more compact PS pump. If you can score one of them you won't have any issues. My Magnum came out of a mashed 3/4 ton van.
If you dial your electric choke in right it should start and run cold with very little problems. Remember a Magnum has no provision for a heat riser.
There are a lot of positives with a Magnum swap. More Power, better mileage, Nice serpentine belt accessories, Highly efficient Sanden type AC compressor. You can't lose.
