Unhappy

I recently purchased a new 2000 Dakota extended cab that I really enjoy. The window sticker, operator's manual etc. tell me I have a 22 gallon tank, yet I've never been able to get more than 15.7 gallons of gas in it. My dealer looked at it while I had the oil changed (to Mobil 1) and he recommended I bring it in with less than an 1/8 tank so they could pull the tank and determine the problem. Has anyone else had or noticed this problem?

I've never been able to get more than 18 gallons in mine (running it very low). I thought there might be something wrong but stopped thinking about it after a few months. I figured the rest of the space is needed for air. Let me know what you find.

Hey Bob I have the same problem. We do have a 22 gallon tank but mine usually takes anywhere from 16 to 18. I've heard a few ideas on why this is, but I think it's just because the tank is so long. Even though the level of the tank is low enough to read empty you still have about 5-6 gallons. You might try keeping a gas can with you and run it untill it quits. It's not good for an electric fuel pump to do this often but it will show you when your fuel gauge really means empty.

In the owners manual it says that when the low fuel warning light comes on there is approximately 3 gallons of fuel remaining in the fuel tank. Hope this helps.

Cool

Yep, mine does the same thing. If I put gas in it when the chime goes off, I can only get about 16-17 gallons in it. I wondered about mine before also....then I screwed up and forgot to get gas even though the light was on. My question was answered right then. It took 21.5 gallons! Now I know I still have some miles left in it when the chime goes off.

Hope this helps!

Hey Duner. Just wondered how many miles it took to empty your tank? Nothing personal but I'm glad you found out before I did. Thanks for the info.

Thanx BlackDak, The one time I waited for the light to come on was when it only took 15.7 gallons. Compared to the ride and comfort, it's a minor irratation I'll gladly put up with.

Thanx Duner.
I see it's time to get out my calculator and determine how far a theoretical "20 gallons" will take me.....

Did the same thing -- forgot about filling up and ran it almost empty - doh! :O

Took around 21.2 gallons.

Sincerely,

As soon as my light comes on, $50.00 to fill it. If I wait until it's on empty, $65.00. Be thankful you don't buy your gas in Canada.

Ya, but Canadian dollars is different eh!! Was that U.S. or Canukian dollars?? I'm paying $1.71 on base and $1.99-$2.01 off base for premium.

And just so everyone knows, if you yank out your door buzzer the day you buy your truck, I guess you lose the gas buzzer too
