I have recently scored a good complete 5.9 engine out of a 96 ram. I also have a real nice 72 plymouth scamp with a 318 and a 904. Now, understanding that a swap like this is a lot of work, has anyone out there done something like this? Is it still a matter of changing one motor mount like a 360? Will a stock controller work with the MPI if I build a wiring harness to connect all the engine sensors, and leave open all the extra stuff? (I want to be able to go into closed loop, not stuck in open loop like the chivy boys I know.) Will a 5.9 bolt up to my 904 if I notch it out for the crank sensor? (I have been told yes and no) Will the 5.9 flex plate work with my torque converter so that I can retain the crank sensor, or will I have to devise another way to get my crank signal? Etc. etc. etc. If anyone has any input on this subject or knows any pitfalls that I am headed for I would love to hear about it!

Go for the swap man. It will be worth it when its done. However, I would use the trans that came from the 360, most likely a a-518 overdrive unit. It may be a pain to figure out a way to get it mounted, also you will have to do some minor electrical work, and you will have to cut your drive shaft but oh boy, to have an overdrive in a 70s car! You could run a 3:90 or 4:10 gear and still cruise it on the highway. I would also put in a 8 3/4 rear end, stronger and easier to swap gears. As far as the sensors, I would just use the wiring harness out of the vehicle the motor came from, and the computers. It may take some creativity again here to figure it all out, but if you look at a 360 in a similar vehicle (to the one the motor is from) you can figure out what wires go where. Its not a weekend swap, but it would be worth the time in my opinion. Im sure you can get motor mounts from schumacher creative services, who knows if you ask em real nice maybe they can help with the trans mount too.
I figure if I can put a 340 in a 87 Ram 50 in my garage you can handle this one. Good luck. ------------------ Laine Lmopar69@hotmail.com |

I was not lucky enough to score the trany with the engine. Besides, I would rather put the engine in and get it running before I open up another can of worms via overdrive. The a500 overdrive trany would be next though. As for the 8 3/4, I just got it put in.
Does anybody else have any input? Specifically about the compatability of the modern 5.9 and a 904, and the new flex plate with my old torque converter? |

You will need to rebalance your converter to the 360 Magnum. The easiest way to do this is to use Mopar Performance's weld on weight kit, part number P5249843. this way you can keep the flex plate. I haven't looked closely at on of those flex plates, so I don't know if they are balanced or how it would all work together. I would also rebuild the 904 if it isn't fairly fresh. A band adjustment and fluid and filter change at the least. I put a 300 HP 360 Magnum Crate engine in front of my 904 and it spit two of them out pretty easily. Not that the 904 can't be built to take it, just don't try it with a 150,000 mile 904.

Yeah, I learned about how to blow up a 904 myself. But I thought I was smart...put a 904 behind a mean 340 in a 87 Ram 50. hmmmmm, less weight, lower gear set... I had a great idea... Maybe I should rebuild it first in my garage! so what do I do...obtain MP Kevlar clutchs, heavy duty band, 5.0 kick down lever, block off the servo, put in a cheetah rev manual valve body, a 3000 stall, and a buy a chiltons so I can get smart on transmisions... it didnt work (for me) $900 later and pulling the trans, and taking this our that apart to fix it 9 times in a year and a half, I learned something... I SHOULD NOT REBUILD TRANSMISSIONS! LOL. So my newest thought is next time, I will order a race 904 from JVX transmissions. $500 and it has a manual valve body already. They also have adapter stuff I m sure they can help you with the balancing and all. Just thought I would share my bad luck (stupidity) about my "fun" with tranys. I guess some of us just dont learn easy (or cheaply).
