Question Windows XP restarts on reconnection

My Compaq computer has picked up an odd habit. Usually if I'm on a site that is too busy or the connection has slowed down. I'll stop, disconnect and reconnect. I have a typical dialup modem, 56K which is currently connected at 21.6 kbps. You can see why I can't hardly wait until cable makes it's way here finally this fall or early next year.
Anyway, when I disconnect, the computer will stay on and stable so I can finish a card game, look at or save a text, but the moment I go to click on the dialer to reconnect, the computer will restart. This happens regardless if I try to reconnect right away or if I wait a bit. If I restart the computer myself, then everything is back to normal, same as if the computer did it.
Not a major PITA but still a pain, anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like a virus or spyware - what are you running for protection?

Just had the thing in the shop for an unrelated update (modem), it's been scanned, checked, no problems as far as spyware is concerned. Besides, it's mainly an aggravation. If it was spyware, what good would it do for the originator of the ware to get between my computer and connection to the net?
It doesn't always do it either, just mainly at times where it seems my connection is fairly busy, ie: lots of graphics and pics on the website or the site itself is busy.

Try searching for the newest drivers for your modem. Just go to the manufacturers website, download the latest driver and install it. That would be my first step.

Not really sure what modem it has, however, I'm just trying to keep this old heap running until cable makes it into my backwoods area, no later than January, I hope!
Then some upgrades, if not an entirely new computer though this one already has a cable modem, unlike my older one.
I'll mention the driver issue to my computer guy, thanks for the info!

Default XP Reconnection Problem

Had this same problem when I did a new install of XP last year, drove me crazy plus all the reconnection charges. I installed the No. 3 service pack and have had no problems since, I also am on dial up.

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely keep that in mind!
I've often wondered if someone could trigger that to happen, or if whenever a problem like this pops up, it's always internal to the machine.
