727 Manual Valve Body
I just got my tranny back from the shop, it has a manual valve body.
Anyone have any tips or no no's about driving with one. Thanks.....Kenny |

No rolling downshifts.

It don't hurt to down shift but don't go into first at a roll and hit the gas. Remember to there is no reason to down shift to first as it will be free wheeling with no engine braking.

It depends on what type of manual VB you have, some of the newer offerings have low band apply (LBA) and the rules for their use are a little different.

He changed my valve body to make it full manual, if that helps any.

Had one for 5 years. Lots of fun, no problems. Only problem I have is remebering if I'm in my Honda or not, because its pattern is the oposite! I drive the Cuda and the Honda kinda hard.

Place the shifter in first gear and accelerate to about 20 mph and then throttle back to idle. If the car slows quickly from compression braking you have LBA, if it just coasts and freewheels with no engine braking it doesn't have LBA.

John, I tried your test and I have LBA. So I guess no down shifting into first when I'm moving.

With low ban apply you can shift to 1st. It is with the no low band apply that you can have troubles down shifting to 1st. It isn't shifting to 1st gear in a no low band apply and coasting that hurts the transmission. It is hitting the gas on the coast that raises hell.

You CAN downshift to 1st while rolling but you'll get the objectional lunge as the band applies and you'll cause more wear and tear on the rear band components.
It's best to wait until the car is near a full stop before downshifting to 1st. |

I believe downshifting a manual VB while rolling will put undue/irregular loads on the transmission internals. Anyone seen a regular automatic downshift while still in motion? (other than passing gear applications). Nobody dares use automatics repeatedly, for repeated upshift /downshift race applications! eg roadies! Try it if you like, but I believe you will soon be back to your transmission mechanic!
And this is what I implied on my first "No Rolling Downshifts " post |
