Default 340 Initial Start

I'm trying to get my 340 started for the 1st time. It cranks over but will not start. It does however backfire through the carb. Which direction should I turn the dist. to get this thing to fire? Thanks.

Start over from scratch. Take out number 1 spark plug and hold your finger over the hole and slow lowly turn the engien over by jumping the relay termina;ls till you just feel compression coming out of the hole. Stop, and then very slowly bring the rest of the way to TDC.
For uniformigty sake the slot in the intermediate shaft should be parrallel with the center line of the engine. Install the distributor so that and the rotor pointing front and slightly to th right front intake bolt. Now make sure that the number one plug wire is in the terminal that the rotor is pointing to and follow the firing order around.

Yeah I did that already. I figure it's advanced or retarded just a little bit so I just need to turn it in the appropriate direction. If it's off by a tooth I'm still wondering which direction to move it clockwise or counterclockwise. Thanks
