Question

I'm currently building a 72 demon pro-street car.440 auto, the car is very solid .It has a narrowed 8 3/4 w/strange axles and 4.88 gears, frame ties, 8pt cage, steel wheel tubs, new full quarter panels and floor pans, wilwood disc brakes in front and polyurethane bushings.I'm running 345/55r15 comp drag radials in the rear and hoosier 26/7.5/15 radials in front.A 727 tranny with a 3800 tci converter to transmit the power. I haven't started on my motor yet.I have a 67 440,besides having the machine work done i'm going to run eagle h-beam rods, ross pistons ,m1 intake,750 race demon carb.My question is about cams and cylinder heads.I thinking of running the mp .590 solid.Would a roller be better on the street?MP aluminum heads or indy?I was told by a engine builder not to run the indys. He said unless your running alot of commpression your wasting your money. The goal is low 11's with no more than 10.5 to 1 compression.

440 Demon - If low 11's are what you're looking for with 10.5 to 1 compression, I have to say I'd go with the 509 HYDRAULIC,P4120237.
Totally streetable,low maintenance,low price.
I have a tubbed 440 Demon and it weighs 3090lbs. without driver, but it's not built as a lightweight. If you hover around 3000lbs I think you will have no troubles going low 11's. What about PICS of your Demon?

I have a 71 Demon that is set up similar to yours chassis wise.My old 440 had a similar setup and I used the Mopar 296/557 cam with 452 heads and the 2.14/1.81 valves and it ran 11.30's all day long, and this was with 9.2:1 compression and cast pistons.

I'd go with the combo that Christopher spoke of. With 10.5 to 1 the 590 will have a little too much duration and you'll lose torque, a must on the street. Also I'd stay away from the aluminum heads. You'll need at least 12.5 to 13 to 1 to run these effectively. The 3800 converter should complement the 557 cam very well. I'd try the 452's(2.14 1.81's)and cut 'em .050-.060". You'll be amazed!! I pretty much disagree with the previous statement about the aluminum heads. They usually are a whole lot better than the factory iron heads and have a lot of potential for further upgrades. They do not require CR in the 13:1 area, they work well even at under 10:1 like proved by the Edelbrock RPM packages. I have used aluminum heads with under 10:1 in a 3600 lbs car, although it didn't run 11.s; it run 12.1 with original 205/75/14 tires and 3.23 gears. I also think that the 296/.557" cam is a good one, it has much more bottom end than the next bigger cam and I think is an excellent street&strip cam. Perhaps, if I were you I would put the engine together with stock heads and wait for the Edelbrock BB heads, they should be available late this year, outperform the Stage VI heads and be a true bolt on without special intakes etc. The price will propably be lower too. Indy has several different heads to offer, and if you go that route, pick the Indy SR heads. They have about same port size and velocity as the Stage VI's but flow better. The bigger port Indy 440-1 heads have less velocity, and you need an excellent carb to get some throttle responce at lower rpm. I would not consider the Stage VI heads. Personally I use them in a 451, and compared to Indys they make much less power. Well prepard stock iron heads with bigger valves will do the same job as pocket ported Stage VI's.

First I think you need to lose the 488 gears. Because they make the car rev too high and it will go out of the power band. Try a 456 or 430. The camshaft: the 590 would work and use a ported 452 head, you don't really need aluminum heads to run low 11's. You must try and keep the RPM's around 6500 because the iron heads woun't make any more power after that RPM, that's where the shorter gear comes in.
