That is a very strange sounding camshaft you have there, I'm thinking it's a typo though. However to get it into the 11's, you'll need some really good heads.

I don't think 413 heads are good for making much power. Its a design thing. Flow limited.

Well the 413 heads are just as capable as any of the other stock heads.. The real issue is do you want to spend $1500 on stock castings, or just buy some out of the box aluminum heads that will out perform them for about the same price?

The 516 cast heads aren't a good choice, 1.6 exhaust valves. If your going to use a stock head 452 or 906 heads would be much better heads to start with or if you have the coin a set of 518 max wedge heads or as stated above a set of after market ally heads.

As far as the cam goes, camshafts a pretty cheap so match your cam to your build, compression, head flow ect. You'll save yourself alot of money and grief in the long run.

Tech Question
Allen Taylor, Hobart, IN, 1967 plymouth fury III 413

I just rebuilt a 413 from a 64 Imperial and I've got it in my 67 Fury that's my daily driver to high school. Its just 0.030 overbored, 0.010 under on the crank, 284/ 284, Lift .484/ .484, Edelbrock carb on the factory intake and hipo late 60s upswept exhaust manifolds. I was wondering what your reccomendations would be, especially on the carb, intake, and heads. Everything is fresh, new valves, guides etc but everyone trash talks the heads and pretty much the motor in general. Everyone around here has 5.0s and V6 mustangs, so there's not much help. Thanks for any info.

Al, there's not really anything wrong with the shortblock, it's just kinda small - in fact, it's the smallest RB engine ever made. But so what - it's there, and it's OK. I agree, however, that the heads and manifold are pretty lousy. Any mid-'70s big block heads (i.e., 346 or 452 casting), will be good for a quick 30 or 40 HP and be unleaded-ready to boot. Match 'em up with a stock '70s intake manifold and you're good to go.

Your cam choice is a tad radical for such a heavy car - hopefully, you have at least a 3.55 cog and decent converter. If not, you might consider a downgrade to improve the low-end and midrange grunt.

All in all, it's a workable combo. The only drawback is all that mass, probably 4200 pounds, that you're lugging around. But, hey, you're in high school, and the Fury's back seat is couch-sized... ;->

Tech Question
Tom Schaffhausen, St. Paul, MN, 1965 Plymouth Belvedere II hardtop 318

I want to do a motor change. I have a 1962 413 engine I want to put in my '65 Belvedere. I bought a '65 Newport that had the original 383 engine and auto transmission. Will the 65 auto tranny bolt up to my 413 engine and then fit in my '65 belvedere?

Tom-

Yes, it will all fit, all you'll really need is an engine mount setup from Schumacher. As you probably know, 1965 727 transmissions are highly prized - they were one-year-only: cable-shifted, yet sliding-spline output.

While this is a pretty nice swap, there a a few things about it that I find less than appealing, mostly relating to the engine weight vs. power deal. You can build a 408" smallblock cheaply that will easily make as much power as a near-stock (non-Maxi) 413, be an easier installation, and even keep the stock trans. Or, a 400" '72-up B-engine is nearly the same displacement, is smaller, lighter, has better heads (again, assuming a non-Maxi 413), stiffer cylinder walls, etc.

Assuming that you insist on an RB engine, why not at least start with a 440? It weighs no more than the 413, and all '67-up 440 blocks are stronger than your 413, most also have much better heads, too.

So, to be clear, my point is: if you're going to go to the trouble of a swap, the cost of the "core" engine is one of the lesser expenses. Yes, the 413 is certainly not a bad engine, but why not make the best possible choice?

The two articles above I would disagree with several assumptions. Now if you're talking stock vs stock, then yes the later heads with the larger exhaust valve will flow better, but if you're gonna be doing head work on both of them, the ports will all flow practically the same, and it is a common practice to increase the exhaust valve size on the 516 heads. Plus the 516 heads have a much better combustion chamber than the later heads... (Ever notice how all the early 60's motors never have a problem with detonation, while the smog motors are pinging pigs all the while the early 60's motors had more compression?) Secondly I will take a 62 non-EGR intake over the 72 and later intake any day of the week... Ok third show me a 408 small block with a stock profile cam and stock heads that will run with a 413.... yeah a bunch of BS there... but they did say that 408 could be built cheaply, well give me the same amount to spend in a 413, and I would wipe the floor with that small block... better yet I would do it with a 383.. lol

Oh and another thing... the 413 was not the smallest RB... the long stoke 383 was the smallest......

383 CI V-8 RB Wedge

From the net: In 1959, the Chrysler 383 CI was a RB engine. It had a 4.03125-inch bore with a 3.75-inch stroke in a raised block. The two-barrel models made 305hp while the four barrels cranked out 325hp. This engine was used for the Chrysler Saratoga and Windsor. This engine only lasted for two years (1959-1960) before Chrysler would go to the same shorter deck B model 383 CI that Dodge and Desoto used.

CID HP torque compression
413 340 @ 4600 470 @ 2800 10.00 : 1

As far as time goes with 906 heads and a cam that will support power brakes, my guess going by the 383 I had in my Cuda with a simialer combo, mid to high 12s. It ran high 12s low 13s. The guy I bought if from didn't know the cam specs but it was hydraluic had a bit of a lumpy idle and the brakes would go rock hard every once in awhile. It had 906 heads with some work and 11 to 1 compression. 2800 stall and 391 gears.
