Default Small block limits

Ok,I'm a newbie at this posting biz,but not motors,so if this topic has been done before, excuse me and direct me to the original topic.
I'd like to know if anyone has pushed the limits with stock production chrysler smallblocks,I know it's fairly common knowledge that 500/550hp is the number that they start splitting bores, but has anyone out there got more power out of them than that?
My block is a '72 360 block,1/2filled with hardblock& milodon splayed 4 bolt mains with studs(and Sandborns oil mods),how much do you think it'll handle?
Please quote hp&torque,as well as max rpm/crank stroke/comp if you can.thanks.

A friend of mine has got a 6-71 blown 340 that pushed out 680 hp at 7100 rpm on pump gas. It's a stock block with the milodon splayed caps, and has been originally built in the early 1990's

I have been off the boards for a while, as I moved to Tennessee (near Hohenwald LOL!) but I have done bone stock 360's at 500-550 hp, but never tried it higher. Agreed the use of splayed caps (Pro Gram was employed on the several we did) was a plus.

Explain your bone stock 360 making 500-550 HP fellow Tennessean

There was a fellow on here that ran a twin turbo 360 and successfully split the block down the center. He said most likely it was knocking under boost and he didn't know it. It finally too it's toll.

Sorry, I meant stock BLOCK. LOL! That was a dumb one. Did I mention I have a 200000 horse tutu? JK. Those 360's were carefully prepped, but still ran cast cranks. I am amazed at the weakness of GM cast cranks compared to Mopar cranks stock to stock.

The more power you get, the shorter its life-span will be, but we all know that... I'm sure you can get 1000hp out of it for 1 or 2 runs, but then, its done. Are we talking consistant street power? With turbos, superchargers, or other monstruosities attached? Or just working with the existing components and modifying them?

I figure he meant sustainable power. It would vary I am sure, but have it sonic checked b4 trying any sort of envelope pushing.

There's definitely an advantage to maintaining the bore as close to stock as possible (minimum overbore) if you want to max out the HP potential - thicker cyl. walls = better ring sealing. The extra 5-7 cubes a .030 to .040 over won't return all that much power. (IMHO, anyway)

Agreed. I have built them at 40 or 60 over, but for both that were over 500, were at .010 if I recall correctly.

Yea,Mines 40 over, but we checked it coz I had to sleeve a pot coz some dumbass(me)made a mess pulling a slug out and had to sleeve one,and it was the thickest 360 block my machinist had seen(not that he's doin 'em everyday mind you).
Yea I'm talking bout N/A motors really, maybe some spray, blowers are the easy way out I reckon, and if you've got the $$ to do that, you should have an R block anyway....
