Good idea getting a point style distributor, this way you can check everything else before you get any further into it. 10 year old aftermarket electronics should probably be checked over very carefully anyway.

I would change the oil and filter
before running it after all the attempts
trying to start it.
Good Luck Steve

putting in points to try and get it running is the best decision, im running Mallory coil, dist, and hyfire 6al box, the dist module was bad on our first start-ups..they said that module either works 100% or it doesnt-that was bull because it was only firing 6 cylinders. It worked great after we replaced the dist. module. Make sure that coils good too..good luck!

Yes, the point ignition and the alternator-charging system are 2 different circuits. However, don't let the power line for the original ignition get grounded!

Never heard of cavatating.
A high volume oil pump can suck a
stock pan dry in a 1/4 mile run.
Should of had oil pressure in both
spots you tryed.
4 bolts on my 440 oil pump.

Tha's a pretty high voluma pump. Where does it pump all that stuff or is it inside the pump? Wonder why I have never had that happen, and I have driven pretty long at 6000 rpm both with a small and BB with a hi vol pump and a stock pan?

Baiva, (sp) It fills the valve covers.
When I had cheap non baffeled breathers
it would puke oil out of them.
I have a low pressure lite that has flashed
at the traps 2 or 3 times over the years.
That is with a 7 quart pan with 6 quarts of oil.
10 second 440.

Fills the valve covers? How about the gravity, doesn't it come back down? It's pretty remarkable condiering that head oiling comes through about 1/8" passage in the camshaft that is only open for maybe 15 degrees per crank revolution. But if you say your valvecovers are full of oil, then it must be so. I haven't had that problem even with continuous head oiling from teh rear fo teh block. I would rather suspect proper baffling in the pan, restricted return and improper pick up location/distance.

They are not identical, they only go to where they are meant to be.

You haven't had it happen because unless there is something else wrong it ain't going to happen. Even on circle track the only way the the pan gets sucked out is is centrifical forces that push the oil to the outside of the pan away form the sump.

Cavatating is when there is a vapor lock of sorts within the pump. It sucks in air and needs to be primed/purged to get it to function. I had that issue with a mech fuel pump that had blown a check valve.
