Default 5 Speed options

Is there 5 speeds and can adapt relatively easy? I read on a few but looks to be a lot of modifying to make them fit.

Anybody here put in a 5 speed?

Bob

Cageman,

You got my attention! First thought I had was 2wd or 4wd tranny, what year, what bellhousing? How is the gear ratio?

Hydraulic clutch?

I know, lots of questions.

Cageman,

"Magnum Headed" Sounds interesting, how well does it run and what advantages are there?

Cageman,

I have done a lot of reading, the s-10 tranny is a T-5 which needs a bellhousing like a quicktime 6071 and may be others.

got any pics of your install? How much fabrication??

Default Magnum heads

Are very good flowers, and have no obstructions in the exhaust ports. They have large valves as well. Mine are 2.02/1.65".

no fabrication, all bolt in deal. I had to get a custom made clutch disc, the 91 s10 was a 4 cylinder, and it had I think a 9 1/4 inch clutch, and I needed a 10 1/2. If I was to do it over, I would go with the 6 cylinder s10, as it has a better over drive, Im running 3.91 rears.
stock magnum heads, floats the valves at 5400, but nothing good happens past that anyways, lol. I had to notch the cylinders. Valve springs and retainers are spendy, and Im cheap so I used the stock stuff. They were low mileage heads, so i just bolted them on. runs good.
I used the s10 hydro clutch master, almost a bolt in.
I used a howe hydro release bearing, bolt in. Lakewood bell, bolt in. Made a bushing that adpated a chevy input bushing on a lathe. The trans x memeber all I had to do was drill one hole for the s10 rubber mount to bolt in. Made my own driveshaft I also made the 4door valiant this is all in a 2 door. Was going to use a camaor t5, but the shifter wasnt right, the s10 was perfect.
Im not going to answer the 4 wheel drive or two wheel drive. If you have to wonder this, you shouldnt be attempting this.

LOL,

That was me rambling without thinking a bunch. Thank you for your help.
One more question, they list old style T-5 and later style style, The later style being the better.

What year S-10 Tranny did you use?

Hey, thanks you guys. I've often thought about going to a stick (no such thing in a Mirada) and that plan sounds doable. Cage, I assume your Valiant was orig. a std. car? Or did you need to fab the pedal as well?

Well if I can find a close ration 5 speed out of a camaro I have read you can swap the S10 tail housing so that would be a plus / no fabrication on rear crossmember.

Cageman,..... A little more reading and I found out what the differences on the T-5's are. That transmission has been around!

Orig a standard car, yes. I had to drill a hole in it to mount the s10 master that was it. It mounts in the same hole the clutch rod went through.
It is a tiny little tranny, I think I had to cut a piece off to make it clear the car somewhere, it has been so long I forget why I cut it off. It also has an elec speedo, so that is nice too, it comes out right by the rear trans x memeber, so a cable would not work, not sure if the older ones had cable speedos. I put all new guages in, so a digital speedo was no big deal for me. I ahve flogged on the thing many times trying to kill it, but no dice so far. I even do reverse to seconds to make those J marks on the asphalt, LOL When I first got it going, the 8 3/4 had 2.76 gears, I couldnt even use overdrive. It would have to do 140 to go into overdrive, and the cops didnt like that. On my first voyage with the car, I was cruising along, and it woudl surge so bad at idle in overdrive I had to keep in it you know, well a cop came pulling up and he said it took him twenty miles to catch me. I didnt have the speedo yet, and he knocked it down to 90 in a 75. I have a set of 323 sure grips to put in next, I think it will be a better gear, 391 in first is kind of pointless now. I cant get a bigger tire on the back height wise. When I minitubbed it, I put the axle back an inch, but I need another half inch to get a taller tire in there, and I dont feel like doing that, so the 3.23 will have to do. I want to drag race it once before I take the 3.91 out, but I have yet to put a driveshaft hoop on. here is a picture of where the shifter comes out, I think you could use an auto console even. It is dead center on the hump.

So it's a 3.91:1 first gear?

Basically, it makes either first gear or fifth gear useless depending on what rear axle ratio you run.

The T-5 from an 83-92 camaro or firebird with a V8 would have a much better gear ratio spread than something from a V6 or pickup.

You could run a 3.23 or 3.55 rear end with one of those. And you could use all 5 speeds.

Gear ratio's for a V8 F-body are 2.95, 1.94, 1.34, 1.00, 0.74

Where as the later V6 F-body ratios are 3.97, 2.34, 1.46, 1.00, 0.79

That is the gear ratio I want. The "new world class" are 88 and newer according to this Hemming article.http://www.hemmings.com/mus/stories/...feature25.html

Here is a complete application and identification site: http://www.britishv8.org/Articles/Bo...T5-ID-Tags.htm

This is brand new to me so the info may not be accurate but may help someone.

Cageman,

Looks like you need one, then you wont need to change the 3.91 rear diff!

First gear wont be useless, you will be able to drag race and hit the autobahn!

Cageman,

My car is an original 4 speed and the cut out for the shifter is offset to the left. It looks like the S10 tranny shifter is dead center. What did you do?

red is expensive. Lots of pigment.
I about fell over last year when I went to buy the yellow paint for the rumble bee I fixed up. I bought a gallon and it was 800 bucks. damn. Probably the best paint I have ever sprayed though and it covered well, I had to get tinted sealer for it tho, so that prob helped, matched perfect and you cant even tell where I blended it.
I scored a 5 speed camaro tonight. Now I need a new clutch disc, as my s10 is a dumb spline, but I got a 5 speed. Im not going to swap it any time soon, to many other irons in the fire, and I would like to kill the 5 speed that is in it, the one everyone said it wouldnt hold up. It has been a few years now too.
